This walk, accessible from Selonnet, offers the chance to discover a gem of the UNESCO Haute-Provence Geopark. The La Grosse Pierre trail leads to a panoramic view of the village of Selonnet and its surroundings, and, above all, to an impressive 550-tonne block of sandstone.

Grosse Pierre

Description of the walk

Park in the village square (near the town hall) or at the village hall.

(S/E) From the village centre, with your back to the town hall, turn left towards the La Boulangère neighbourhood (village hall). Continue along the dirt track (GR®6) towards Seyne-les-Alpes. Keep left at the Fork in the road and you’ll reach a second junction at a place called Pourret.

(1) Turn left towards “Pierre Grosse” until you reach the wooden bridge.

(2) Cross the bridge and the D900 with care, then head up towards the Chemin de la Haute Liberne, following the tarmac road. Take a hairpin bend to the right and continue to the next right-hand bend near a field.

(3) Follow the yellow markings and turn left into the field. Continue along the path at the edge of the forest, which is still marked in yellow, until you reach the Grosse Pierre.

(4) To get back on track, starting from the Grosse Pierre, turn your back on the stone and walk 30 metres until you see the signs pointing left towards Selonnet. You’ll reach the road.

(5) Turn left and carry on until you reach the D900.

(6) Carry on to your left towards Selonnet. Take care, and at the bend, carry on straight ahead on the D900c, then take the first left to reach the town hall (S/E).

Physically easy hike, no notable difficulties. With my little King Charles, it took us 20 minutes less than indicated.
However, the first part up to La Grosse Pierre is not particularly interesting as you follow tarmac roads.
