The Vineyard Trail in Conques

Located in the heart of the Lot Valley, Conques-en-Rouergue, listed as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France" and "Villages of Charm in France", is an essential stop on one of the Saint James' Ways, the GR®65 - the Via Podiensis. As you walk around the Abbey Church of Sainte-Foy (12th-13th centuries) and through the narrow streets, you can admire the beautiful half-timbered houses.
The hike crosses the medieval village, then passes through the vineyards, offering beautiful views of Conques and the Dourdou valley.

Description of the walk

Departure from the free car park, Route de Moulinols, D90.

(S/E) Follow the D901 for 100 m, heading south. At the medieval bridge (D232), take the stairs on the left to Rue Charlemagne.

(1) Turn right and climb up to the Chapelle Saint-Roch to admire the view over Conques, then descend to return to Rue Charlemagne.

(1) Turn right, go through the Porte du Barry and climb up to Rue de l'Abbé Gonzague Florens.

(2) At Place du Parvis, go around the Abbaye Sainte-Foy on the left and follow Rue Parayre to the upper car park.

(3) Turn left, then immediately right, join Route de Sénergues and continue straight ahead, leaving Route du Vignoble on your left.

(4) After about 150 m on Route de Sénergues, at the end of the right-hand bend, leave the road and take the path on the left, which is slightly hidden by vegetation, joining Chemin des Colombiers and the GR®65.

(5) Turn right onto Chemin des Vignes and continue along the path. After a steep climb, the path comes to a crossroads.

(6) Keep left and follow Chemin des Vignes through the Conques vineyard. The path loops around these heights, offering a lovely view of the valley.

(7) Cross the Route du Vignoble, go down Rue Mérimée opposite, turn left into Rue du Couvent, then right into Rue du Château leading to the centre of Conques and the Abbaye Sainte-Foy (avoid visiting during religious services).

(2) To return to the car park (S/E), follow Rue de l'Abbé Gonzague Florens, then Route du Vignoble D42 as shown on the map (or go back down Rue Charlemagne, the same route you took on the way there).

A walk with no major difficulties. We did it with two dogs weighing 10 and 20 kg without any problems. Whilst the village of Conques is stunning, the route around the site via the footpaths isn’t particularly interesting.

Conques is a major stop on the Way of St James, the GR®65 - Via Podiensis, marked in red and white and very popular.
Proposed by the Conques Tourist Office, the yellow markings on this route are not perfect.
I recommend following the GPX route published in Visorando.

A short route that is sufficient to explore Conques. An added bonus is possible by taking the footpath that starts at the bridge on the D232. After a 5-minute climb, there is a beautiful panoramic view of the village and the Conques valley.
