The Resistance Trail on the heights of the Côtes d’Arey

A lovely circular route, easy and with little elevation gain, very pleasant in summer. We walk along the heights of the Côtes d’Arey and pass close to a memorial, a tribute to the Resistance fighters who used to walk these paths at the risk of their lives.

Description of the walk

The starting point of the walk is at the junction of the Montée de la Vermillière and the Chemin de Revollet.

Setting off from the church at Les Côtes d’Arey, take the D131A towards the hamlet of Saint Mamert. Pass the chapel and continue to the hamlet via the Montée Saint-Mamert-le-Bas, then the Montée Saint-Mamert-le-Haut. Please note that this track is often used by farm machinery, so make sure you park your vehicle correctly.

(S/E) Take the wide path that continues straight ahead due east and crosses the Révolets State Forest. When you reach the junction with the path to the Arbre Triomphal, go straight ahead.

(1) Reach the junction marked ‘Les Révolets – elevation 412’ and carry on straight ahead until you reach the crossroads.

(2) Turn right and take the wide path coming from Saint-Sorlin-de-Vienne. Continue to the junction at the entrance to the forest.

(3) Head straight ahead.

(4) Pass by the monument honouring the Resistance fighters. If you continue along the road straight ahead, you may come across a plaque commemorating one of these Resistance fighters. Otherwise, turn left andtake the tarmac road leading to the hamlet of Le Barjon, running alongside the power line.

(5) Just before the hamlet, take the Chemin des Étangs on the left, then continue along a shaded path leading back to the path you took earlier.

(3) Return to the starting point by following the route in reverse (S/E).

Worth a visit

At waypoint (4), in the heart of the countryside, there is a monument dedicated to members of the Resistance who were executed at this spot.

A little further on, continuing along the road, there is a tribute to one of them, with a plaque explaining the circumstances of his arrest on 18 June 1944.
