Description of the walk

Starting point: Pré Grasseur leisure area.

(S/E) With your back to the pond, take Rue du Pré Grasseur straight ahead. At the crossroads, continue straight ahead, alongside the sports ground.

(1) Turn right onto Chemin du Douanier Rousseau, a small country lane in the heart of a future residential area. At the crossroads, take the hairpin bend to the left onto Rue de Kergestin. As you leave the hamlet, continue along a path.

(2) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead. Pass through Petit Quelo, Quelo and then Kerrou. You will come out onto a small road.

(3) Follow the road to the left for about 350m.

(4) At a bend to the right, take the small road on the left. When this turns right, leave it and continue straight on along a path. Walk alongside the Bois de l’Épine for about 1500m.

(5) Continue south-southeast along the edge of the woods to the Cour aux Loups.

(6) Cross the road, continue straight on for 200m and take the path on the left which crosses the woods. Ignore the side paths until you reach La Gassun.

(7) Cross the D774 then the Littoral orchards (private land) following the red and white markings ofthe GR®39. Leave the orchards by taking the path that runs alongside the pond.

(8) Once you have descended the embankment steps, follow an old Roman road. Turn left before the hamlet of La Baronnerie.

(9) About 400m further on, turn left again. You will then be walking through the area where much of the clay used for pottery was once extracted. Pass through the pretty village of Trévelec, set in lush greenery. At the T-junction, turn left and you will immediately come out onto the D47.

(10) Cross the D47 and follow the cycle route (the path with the pink surface) to the foot of the Longle lagoons.

(11) Turn left before the Govelin stream and follow it for 400m. Take the footbridge and go round the sewage treatment plant and the Municipal Technical Centre on the right.

(12) At the community gardens, take the path on the left. At the end, turn right onto Rue de la Grée du Rocher. Turn left to follow and then cross the D47 again, taking the small path next to the last workshop in the Pré Govelin area. Walk down Rue des Cambelles, turn left onto Rue du Pré Govelin, then right onto the path leading to the D774.

(13) Cross the main road and head back towards the village of Herbignac via Rue du Pont de Men. This street is accessible to pedestrians via the landscaped area marking its southern entrance.

(14) Turn left twice and follow Chemin du Clos du Poivre. This path, lined with tall trees and other communal gardens, will take you back to the starting point after skirting the pond (S/E).

This route was mapped out by the Les Galocheux association with the support of Herbignac Town Hall.

Notes

The Pré Grasseur leisure area has toilet facilities and a service point for motorhomes. It is also a pleasant spot for a picnic by the pond.

Alternatives:
At the junction (2), you can shorten the circular route by turning left and rejoining the main route at La Croix de Landieul. You will then take the Chemin des Mules, a route once used by the Guérande willow workers to travel to Morbihan.
At the crossroads (5), you can turn right to take a detour via Landieul, an old pottery village which still has two visible pottery kilns.

Worth a visit

The village of Landieul is where the Herbignac pottery tradition survived the longest (until the mid-20th century). The remains of two pottery kilns can still be seen there, as well as the workshop of the last potter. The purchase of these premises by the great-granddaughter of the last potter should make it possible to reopen these currently closed sites to visitors. You can reach it from point 5, and rejoin the route at the Croix de Landieul.

Between (2) and (3), the dairy farms of Quélo, Petit Quelo and Kerrou are former farms belonging to the Coët-Castel estate in Férel, as is the Bois de l’Épine, which the path skirts around.

Between (7) and (8), you can pick and buy fruit from the orchards.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

Thanks for the info; I’ll have to go back there for a walk. People have been talking about this restoration for over thirty-five years!
For your information, I invite you to look up the article published in the journal Ar Men in the early 1990s by Lionel Pirault. This archaeologist had excavated the site at the time, particularly the shard pit located behind the Hervoche kiln (the one on the right), and traced its history back to the beginning of our era.
Enjoy reading it if you can find it.

Hello, since writing this review, I’m pleased to report that the two pot-belly stoves have been beautifully restored. Don’t miss Landieul.

A pleasant walk with a long stretch through woodland. It’s a shame that the route after (11) is very unclear – in particular, which footbridge is it supposed to be??? I couldn’t find it!!!
Note at (10): first follow the cycle path which, a little further on, crosses the D47 (and don’t cross the main road straight away!)

Hello,
The simplest thing is for me to publish the route I’ve mapped out, to tell the story of the potters of Herbignac.
This is a route I offer all summer long, starting from Ranrouet Castle. My route follows part of the Galocheux trail and includes few land consolidation paths and no roads.
Have a good day.
Michel.

The Potiers route is one of those mapped out and described by Les Galocheux, an association based in Herbignac. If you think it could be improved, you should suggest this to the association’s organisers. To get through Landieul, you’d still have to take quite a few farm tracks or minor roads of little interest, in this hiker’s opinion.
Have a good evening

Hello,

Thank you for your feedback.

It’s a shame that this route doesn’t go through Landieul.

Was it the fact that the route doesn’t go through Landieul that led you to rate the reliability of the route on the map as ‘Average’?

See you soon

Hello,
It’s a shame this route doesn’t go through Landieul. This village was home to potters until 1945. Today, the ruins of the last two pottery kilns in Herbignac remain. Laurence, their owner, is trying to have these kilns listed so that they can be restored. Be sure to make a detour; Laurence is a fountain of knowledge on the subject.
Enjoy your walk.

The end of the route doesn't quite follow the map, but it's fairly easy to find your way.

Please note: the ground is very muddy in the Brière, but it’s lovely when the irises are in bloom
