The Chemin des Loups in Argentré-du-Plessis

Wolves were very common in Brittany until the 19th century. The Argentré-du-Plessis region was no exception. Although its refuge was the Pertre forest, which we will cross in its western part, its hunting ground extended over the entire municipality, as evidenced by the names of certain localities such as Louveaudière, Cul de Loup and even the Bois de Noirloup, which we will pass by. But you can hike in complete safety, as the wolf has been extinct in the region for over a century.

Description of the walk

In Argentré-du-Plessis, head towards Mondevert. The Moulin Neuf lodge is on the right as you leave the town. Park in the car park near the lodge or 100 m to the south if it is full.

Red and yellow markings for theGRP® Tour des Marches de Bretagne

(S/E) Set off along the edge of the Moulin Neuf pond on your left.
After the left-hand bend, leave the Moulin Neuf path and take the path on the left. Initially, it runs alongside the pond and then moves away from it. Turn right onto the first path and follow it to the right until you reach the road.
Cross the road and immediately take the path on the left between the houses and the road.

(1) Just before the roundabout, turn left. After 50 metres, cross the Ham des Poulinières road at the pedestrian crossing.
Here, leave theGRP® markings temporarily and follow only the wolf's head markings.
Continue on the pavement on the other side. Continue right along Rue de la Croix Perrault and after 80 metres follow the path on the right. Follow it to a T-junction.

(2) You will find the red and yellowGRP® markings again.
Turn left When you reach the road at Les Feux Chalines, turn left. Ignore a path on the left and, at a bend, continue straight on towards Les Gastelleries.

(3) Continue along this road, ignoring the access to Les Gastelleries and then a path coming from the right. Continue along the road coming from Haut du Bois. Leave La Giltière on your right and arrive at La Goderie Neuve.

(4) Turn right and follow the road for 400 metres. Take the first road on the left, then turn right after the Croix buildings. Follow this wide stony path, which initially heads east and then east-south-east.

(5) Leave theGRP® which continues straight ahead by turning left at the crossroads.
After crossing the D33, continue straight ahead and enter the Pertre Forest. Follow a straight logging track.

(6) At the fork in the road, turn left (the path opposite is not very visible).
Be careful in the forest to follow the markings (very well done and complete) of the wolf heads and do not confuse them with the bridle route, which is a little less picturesque.
When you reach a clearing, take a cross path on the left.

(7) A double signpost for route No. 26 indicates either straight ahead or to the right. Continue straight ahead or to the right for horse riders. The two routes meet after 500 m.
Shortly after the junction, turn left. The path runs along the fence of a private property on the left-hand side of the forest. Continue along the path, turning left at the edge of the forest and then between two fields for 400 metres.

(8) Follow the path separating the fields on the right. Continue left on the road until you reach a T-junction. Turn right for 70 metres and then left onto a path lined with chestnut trees. You will arrive at Le Poirier.

(9) Continue right on the road. Before reaching the main road, just after a gate with a sign saying "Chantier interdit au public" (Construction site, no public access), take the path that turns sharply left. Walk along the Étang du Moulin Aux Moines.
Leave the lodge on your left and continue along the road, following the path.
When you reach the main road, take the footpath on the left-hand side.

(10) Turn left through the trees (fairly steep descent) to follow the northern shore of the Étang du Moulin Neuf and return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

The "Chemin des Loups" route is fully and doubly marked with white signs containing a green triangle bearing the number 26, very often accompanied by a yellow wolf's head with its snout pointing in the direction of travel.
The above description and these notes were written by "Le Randonneur Breton".

At (4), aPR® trail branches off to the left. This is a shortcut variant of the route (11 km instead of 14.4 km). It is marked by yellow wolf heads in brackets and leads to (9) via Haut-Repas, La Bondie and Les Guisalées. This shortcut has not been tested by the author.

Worth a visit

Nearby, on the way to Vitré: the Château des Rochers-Sévigné: this château, owned by the Marquis de Sévigné, was between 1644 and 1689 the place of inspiration for the Marquise, who wrote 294 letters there, most of which were addressed to her daughter, Françoise, who lived in Provence. The French garden, dating from 1689, was designed by Le Nôtre.

A beautiful, easy and very pleasant hike on this cold morning.
Please note that forestry work is taking place in the Pertre forest between points N48° 03.597' W1° 05.627' and N48° 03.597' W1° 05.627' (segment between points 7 and 8), requiring you to climb over or go around felled trees.
For those who are tired, it is possible to shorten the route by avoiding the Pertre forest, a marked path between points 4 and 9. The GPX track is available on the Vitré Community of Communes website.

Hello,

We did this hike on Saturday and didn't see a single person...
What's more, the sun was shining, so we got a good tan.

I rated the route as "good" because it depends on the person.
We like solitude when we go hiking, so it was very good for us.
(If you are quiet and pay attention, you may see buzzards and herons )
In terms of scenery, you have to like seeing fields and forests, but really, it was a wonderful walk for us.

I recommend it.

We only did the circular route through the woods from La Denisière; then we finished off by road – which was quiet when we were there (passing in front of the Fauconnerie manor house). A very pleasant walk on paths (for this section).
