(S) Car park at the town hall, on the main street in the centre of the village of Echay.
Go down the main road (D102) towards Myon. Pass the wash house. At the end of the village, at the sign, take the yellow-blue marked path on the right (Belvédère des Grands Ruins loops). After 300 metres, at the fork, take the gravel road on the left. The yellow-blue sign is barely visible. Follow the road until it leaves the woods and joins the RD15 at a bend.
(1) Follow it up to the right, leaving the road to Bartherans on your left. A yellow sign will indicate the direction of the viewpoint.
(2) After 1 kilometre, watch out for a forest path on the right, marked by a sign, which will take you to the Grands Ruins viewpoint. After admiring the view of the village of Échay, retrace your steps for about ten metres and take the forest path on the right. A sign will indicate the direction of the Chaux viewpoint. The path joins the D15A. Follow it to the left for 200 metres and, at the bus shelter, turn right, following the yellow and blue markings towards La Pierre.
(3) Opposite a house, turn left onto a tarmac road which quickly turns into a dirt track ending in a meadow. Look out for a signpost on a fence post indicating a small path on the right which enters the forest.
(4) You will arrive at a rest area with two picnic tables. Pass the tables and turn left onto the gravel path that descends towards Cussey-sur-Lison. After about 500 metres, look for a small wooden staircase on the right that descends towards some small waterfalls. A sign with a hare will show you the way. You will reach the village by walking through the valley and following the Goulue stream. The Goulue has its source at the bottom of the Cussey-sur-Lison valley and crosses the village via a small canal spanned by several small bridges.
(5) Head towards the centre of the village by turning left after a charming wash house, then quickly right to visit the church. Retrace your steps for 100 metres and turn right onto Rue du Chalet.
(6) Walk along a deer enclosure for 600 metres and, 50 steps after a yellow and blue cross that is difficult to see on a tree on the left, do not continue along the tarmac road. Instead, turn left at the hairpin bend onto a forest path that climbs up the hillside.
(7) You will arrive at the cliffs, where the path splits. Take the right-hand path (Boucle des Falaises) to reach the viewpoint. You will soon come to a wider path opposite a sign pointing to the right towards the Croix viewpoint overlooking the Cussey-sur-Lison valley. Turn back to the sign and continue straight ahead towards the Belvédère des Chaux viewpoint.
(8) You will come out at a wider, stony path, which you follow to the left. After 200 metres, at a fork, take the left-hand path to the meadow. Follow the edge of the woods for 500 metres, keeping an eye out for signs for Boucle de la Falaise
. You will come to a forest path that enters the woods again and runs along the cliff. A little over a kilometre further on, don't miss the viewpoint over the Cussey-sur-Lisine valley.
(9) Continuing on your way, you will come back to the picnic area. Pass the tables again, leaving the stone path we came down earlier on your left, and take the forest path on the right that enters the woods (yellow-blue sign).
(10) You will arrive at a small meadow and a fork in the path. Take the right-hand path to reach the Ferme de Bellevue. Follow the tarmac road to the right for 600 metres and a sign will invite you to leave it and turn left towards Échay on a small path that leads perpendicularly into the forest. Follow the yellow and blue markers.
(11) You will soon come to a wire fence. At the end of the fence, look out for the markers, one on the ground and the other on a stake, which advise you to go down the pasture on the far right towards the road. The gate in the barbed wire fence is not easy to spot, but there is a small passageway that will allow you to squeeze through.
(12) Go down the road towards the centre of the village. At the roundabout, turn right, passing in front of the war memorial. You are now back on the main road and will easily find the car park.
The route includes cliff-side paths and unsecured viewpoints.
