To confirm all the reviews, this is definitely one of the most beautiful parts of the Mafate hikes... but everything is so beautiful in Mafate that it's hard to say that!
The Aurère islet is an interesting place to spend a pleasant evening after your hike, strolling around this magnificent islet with a nice bar for the evening!
It's important to set off early in the morning to arrive around 3 or 4 pm...
The lodges in Aurère are all great, either traditional and family-run or more "comfortable and modern".
It's up to you!
Be aware, however, that this hike is still challenging, even if it is technically easy.
The two-day round trip is physically demanding.
You need to be well seasoned in hiking, and it's not a Sunday afternoon stroll!
The significant elevation gain and the lack of change in slope direction put your physical fitness to the test!
It is much more demanding than the Nouvelle or Marla hikes.
Be careful on the long root passages under the large trees on the Plaque side when it is wet, as it is very slippery!
There is no water on the route before Ilet à Malheur...
There are no truly aerial passages, and in any case, they are so secure that they do not pose a problem.
The return via Augustave remains an interesting option, at least when it's dry.

The descent from Col des Boeufs to Aurère took us six hours with a 10-kilo rucksack for the complete hike in the Cirque de Mafate.
Lush forest, tree ferns, dizzying drops, but nothing dangerous on this hike, which offers a lot of variety (open passages, undergrowth, crossing islets, footbridges over streams).
The constant descent puts a lot of strain on your knees, so consider bringing walking poles.

The Scout Trail is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful trails on Reunion Island.
However, if you suffer from vertigo, give it a miss, although it is not dangerous as it is secure (handrail).
Les Deux Fesses and Le Grand Rein are SUBLIME.
Îlet à Malheur is extraordinary, with a beautiful climb up Aurere.
Downhill on the way there, uphill on the way back.
You can also return via the Augustave trail from Aurore (dizzying footbridges), which is more challenging.

Hello
On the way there, we took the Augustave trail, which was closed but still passable, although very wet in places (we couldn't walk fast). It took us five hours to reach Aurère, walking slowly and stopping often to take photos (three adults and a 12-year-old child). We stayed at the Poinsetia lodge, where the hosts were particularly friendly and the dinner was delicious...
On the way back, we took the Scout trail and it took us 6½ hours.
The scenery is breathtaking and magnificent. If you only do one hike in Réunion, this is the one!
