Description of the walk

Parking available in the centre of the village of Roynac near the church.

(S/E) Starting from the village centre, head up past the church onto the D113 (Route de Gâne). Continue on the right-hand side of the road (take care) until you reach the first path on the right, known as Chemin de la Berianne.

(1) Turn onto this track and continue eastwards, passing the hamlet of Les Granges; then, after the right-hand bend, head due south for about 200 m, ignoring a track that branches off sharply to the left, until you reach a crossroads.

(2) Turn left onto Chemin de la Rochette. 200 m further on, on the right, is the start of the circular route.

(3) Head up to the right onto the dirt track alongside the house, cross the field, turn left to follow the edge of the field and enter the woods. Reach the ridge (views of Chevrière to the right).

(4) Turn left (shared signposting with the Puy-Saint-Martin routes) and continue through the undergrowth until you reach a track.

(5) Take this on the left, and turn left again 50 m further on, along the edge of the woodland and then into the woods until you reach the exit.

(6) Continue straight ahead, cross the field and then the woods to reach a tarmac road.

(7) Turn left onto it in the hamlet of Baron and continue for a few hundred metres to reach a triangular junction marked by a large oak tree.

(8) Leave the road at the large oak tree and head down to the left onto the track (the longer alternative route heads off to the right). Stay on the track, which rejoins the road and takes you back to the junction of the circular route.

(3) Follow the path in the opposite direction to return to the starting point in the village (S/E).

Notes

Worth a visit

The site known as the “Crête de la colline de Chevrière”, which is limited in size (approximately 2.7 ha), is situated at the summit of Mont de la Chevrière, straddling Roynac and Puy-Saint-Martin. The Natural Areas of Ecological, Faunistic and Floristic Interest (ZNIEFF) serve as a scientific inventory and provide a basis for expert assessment.
Its significance lies in the presence of a calcareous grassland and a high potential for orchids and insect fauna…

The path is still fairly quiet at this time of year, with quite a lot of brambles and branches on the narrow tracks (it’s spring and the vegetation is growing well); a pleasant walk through the woodland with plenty of birdsong. On the other hand, I found there was a lot of tarmac on the way back; whilst the roads are certainly quiet, it’s still less comfortable for walking. It’s a shame that the car park is in the centre of the village, meaning at least a two-kilometre walk (there and back) along the road to reach the start of the walk.

A pleasant walk with no particular difficulties, which took us 2 hours and 45 minutes. The return route follows a quiet, tarmac path. At point No. 8, you can extend the route by taking the path on the right marked 70
