The Ballon d'Alsace from Lake Alfeld

A short distance but a steep climb await you. This is therefore a fairly challenging hike. The main attraction of the hike is discovering the steep slopes of the Vosges on the Alsace side. The summit of Ballon d'Alsace is accessible by car.

Description of the walk

Leave your car in the car park at Lac d'Alfeld.

(S) Cross the dam.

(1) Begin the ascent. Follow the Chevalet Rouge markings. The path climbs rapidly in tight switchbacks. On the way up, on the left, you can approach a waterfall.

(2) Continue climbing, leaving the Chevalet Rouge trail, which descends to your left.

(3) 100 m further on, there is another fork; take the right-hand path to join the Rectangle Rouge trail.
Then turn left towards Ballon d'Alsace. Pass Col de la Ronde Tête.

(4) Just before the summit, the slope is very steep and the path winds sharply. Arrive at the summit of Ballon d'Alsace.

(5) For the descent, take the path in the opposite direction, but follow the red rectangle markings for several kilometres. You are now on theGR®5F-GR®7, before descending via the blue triangle and then blue rectangle marked paths.

(6) This last section follows theGR®531trail.
The descent is much less steep than the ascent.

(1) Cross the dam to return to the Lac d'Alfeld car park (E).

Notes

Make sure you wear good walking shoes.
The hike is quite physically demanding, as the slope is steep, especially on the way up.
Remember to bring some provisions and something to drink.
In winter and sometimes late into spring, the final ascent to the summit of Ballon d'Alsace is blocked by a snow cornice several metres high. If this is the case, do not attempt to cross it unless you are properly equipped.

The trails are rather difficult and uneven. More landmarks are needed; we lost the trail (a fork we didn't see...).

We did this hike in August in glorious weather, and the beauty of the landscapes and panoramic views really made it worthwhile.
We may have underestimated the difficulty of the walk (despite the warnings, haha). That didn't stop us from doing it, but the ledge in the last few metres was particularly exhausting. The chalet/refuge just before it was a lifesaver, so don't hesitate to rest there for a moment before the ascent.
In short, this is a highly recommended hike if you have what it takes in your legs.

A superb hike on a beautiful sunny day with autumn colours, and a stunning view of the Sewen valley after the morning mist lifted.

Caught in a storm and rain, we quickly returned to Lake Alfeld instead of continuing towards the Charbonniers Pass. We encountered a salamander on the steep climb, something we hadn't seen in decades.

A fairly challenging hike, especially the last part near the cliff, with quite a bit of snow leading up to Ballon d'Alsace.

Done in early March, lots of snow but still managed without snowshoes, walking poles very useful!

The markings are sometimes discreet, so you lose a bit of time looking for them. There is a nice chalet during the ascent or on the way back for lunch, a waterfall and a completely frozen stream. At the top, there are quite a few people who drive up, and there is a nice view of the Swiss Alps.

At first, I missed the path leading to the summit of Ballon d'Alsace, so I followed another one marked with a red rectangle, I think. I reached the summit via the opposite slope. For the return trip, I took the path I should have taken on the way up. A superb walk.

A very unusual hike with a waterfall and a chalet, and above all the climb up to the Ballon d'Alsace on all fours in the snow, given the slope (45° for 30 metres) and the time of year!
A unique experience for me.
Passing through the forest with granite rocks and lots of moss at this time of year reminded us of a druidic forest (we expected to see Asterix and Obelix running after wild boars!!!) https://www.visorando.com/images/smileys/...
Be careful at the start, though, as there are some very steep slopes that could discourage novice hikers.

Thank you for the hiking route, which was very helpful.

Great route, which does climb quite steeply at times on the way up. But it's worth it, as you regularly come across beautiful views of the Sewen Valley.
