(S/E) From the car park, take the stony path on the south-eastern right.
(1) Cross the Torrent d'Araille and continue for about 50m until you reach the start of the hike, signposted on the left. Enter the woods; the slope becomes steeper after a few metres, so make your way up the switchbacks.
(2) On leaving the woods, head onto the plateau. The path levels out; the Cabane de Lapassa is on the right as you cross the Lapassa stream.
Ideal for a break, you’ll find shade and fresh water there.
Follow the stream on the right bank and climb up the valley. The winding slope is steep. It flattens out at the top of the valley and leads you to the left towards the Cabane d’Escurets.
(3) Continue eastwards, keeping to the ascent.
Reach the Col d’Iseye by following the track through the grass on the right. Once again, the slope is quite steep.
(4) Climb up to the ridge on the left, heading due north, and follow the track. Go round the small peak (1,869m) on the right and head back left towards the Col de Lasbignes.
(5) From the pass, take the path heading north-east. Make your way along the slope and the scree slope, which gradually leads to the Col de Cotcharas (Coig Arras on IGN).
(6) Stay on the ridge, heading due east, and descend past the valley floor to rejoin a path that turns right onto the southern slope. Continue along the path overlooking the cirque.
There are many animals on the path (cows, horses, marmots).
When the slope turns towards the east, head northwards up to the Col de Montagnot.
(7) From the pass, continue on the left-hand side. Walk above small lakes, maintaining the same altitude and heading north. Pass over small hills and continue on to discover the lake.
(8) Lac du Montagnon. Follow the path back to the car park (S/E).
Good hiking experience required. Avoid this route in bad weather. Camping equipment recommended.
