Lac du Montagnon via the Col d’Iseye

Set off to discover this heart-shaped lake nestled in the heart of the Pyrenees! From Accous, the route is long but the scenery is varied and magnificent. You’ll pass through forest, plains and rocky terrain between the Aspe and Ossau valleys. The climb to the Col d’Iseye is steep; the rest of the route consists of long crossings between mountain pastures and scree slopes, with no marked trail.
Good hiking experience required. Avoid this route in bad weather. Camping equipment recommended.

Description of the walk

(S/E) From the car park, take the stony path on the south-eastern right.

(1) Cross the Torrent d'Araille and continue for about 50m until you reach the start of the hike, signposted on the left. Enter the woods; the slope becomes steeper after a few metres, so make your way up the switchbacks.

(2) On leaving the woods, head onto the plateau. The path levels out; the Cabane de Lapassa is on the right as you cross the Lapassa stream.
Ideal for a break, you’ll find shade and fresh water there.
Follow the stream on the right bank and climb up the valley. The winding slope is steep. It flattens out at the top of the valley and leads you to the left towards the Cabane d’Escurets.

(3) Continue eastwards, keeping to the ascent.
Reach the Col d’Iseye by following the track through the grass on the right. Once again, the slope is quite steep.

(4) Climb up to the ridge on the left, heading due north, and follow the track. Go round the small peak (1,869m) on the right and head back left towards the Col de Lasbignes.

(5) From the pass, take the path heading north-east. Make your way along the slope and the scree slope, which gradually leads to the Col de Cotcharas (Coig Arras on IGN).

(6) Stay on the ridge, heading due east, and descend past the valley floor to rejoin a path that turns right onto the southern slope. Continue along the path overlooking the cirque.
There are many animals on the path (cows, horses, marmots).
When the slope turns towards the east, head northwards up to the Col de Montagnot.

(7) From the pass, continue on the left-hand side. Walk above small lakes, maintaining the same altitude and heading north. Pass over small hills and continue on to discover the lake.

(8) Lac du Montagnon. Follow the path back to the car park (S/E).

We did this hike with a friend; we’re intermediate hikers. The route was very difficult to follow; on the final stretch before the lake, the path was virtually non-existent. There were no signposts at the end!! It was incredibly dangerous; we put ourselves at risk walking along the edge of the mountain. The other hikers couldn’t find any signposts either. It’s better to set off from the other side, at Aydius; the 50 or so campers had all done that. The toughest hike of my life, extremely difficult before the Col d’Iseye; the slopes are incredibly steep. The view from the Col du Montagnon is incredible!!! One of my best memories. A must-do, but start from Aydius.

Hello,
We set off on the hike on Thursday 24 June. The weather was uncertain, so we planned to follow the route but turn back if the weather didn’t improve.
We reached the Col d’Isèrbe despite a constant drizzle; there were no problems as the path was well marked and easy to follow.
We took advantage of a break in the weather to stop near Laiterine and enjoy the splendid scenery.
But another storm rolled in, shrouding us in thick clouds; with zero visibility, we listened to the shepherds we’d met a little further down and didn’t go any further. So we can’t comment on the rest of the walk.

In early May, there was still too much snow on the mountain passes to reach the lake.
The estimated time seems a bit optimistic to me for someone carrying a bivouac pack; after 5 hours I hadn’t reached the lake.
It is possible to park closer to the starting point; when you reach the GPS point given, continue by passing to the right of the sign. Locals park just before the first junction indicated on VisoRando.

A lovely day’s hike we went on.
The scenery is varied and you get to see lots of wildlife. We loved the horses...
Take care at the Col d’Iseye to follow the altitude given in the description closely, as there are no markings or they are at least difficult to follow on the first section; after that, it’s no problem.

A superb two-day hike, with a camp near the Escurets hut due to the rain.
Stunning scenery once above the clouds.

Watch out for the Patou dog guarding its flock!
