La Tranchasse - Coust Pond

Construction of the Canal de Berry began around 1808 on the initiative of Napoleon I and was completed in 1841. It took its current name, "Canal de Berry", in 1830. Its creation required, among other things, the installation of 115 locks, one every three kilometres. It consists of three branches that meet at Fontblisse, which is point 0. Many barges used to travel along it, transporting grain, wood and iron ore. The canal was decommissioned in 1955.

Description of the walk

Start at the Pont de la Tranchasse.

(S) Leave the bridge on your right and turn left towards Pellevoisin. Be careful, the road is uphill.

(1) At the crossroads, cross the departmental road and turn right to join the rural path on your left. Be careful, this is a busy road. Then, immediately turn left onto the grassy path and leave the Domaine de la Grange Cornue on your right.

(2) At the first crossroads, take the path on the left, pass the go-kart track, and then follow the stone road on the right. Be careful, there are potholes. Turn left at the next crossroads.

(3) Continue straight ahead on Rue des Rocs. At the stone cross, turn left.

(4) Turn right to go alongside the cemetery, taking Rue de la Verne. Leave the church on your left, continue straight ahead to the bus stop, then follow the road on the right. At the give way sign, turn left onto Rue de la Gauderie. Continue to the junction with the D101.

(5) Continue straight ahead on Rue de la Chaume Paquette and pass the mill. Follow the stone path. Cross the Coutard and Chignon streams. Continue and, after a 90° right turn, you will reach the Chignon stream again.

(6) Cross it and turn left to continue through the fields. You will see a row of poplar trees; stay on the main path to reach the Coust pond (E).
