La Table des Quatre Seigneurs via the Crêtes trail from Ouerdes

A very pleasant walk through beautiful forests along forest tracks and a few well-marked paths. A fairly difficult section that is fully roped off (to be avoided with dogs, otherwise you’ll have to carry them), with numerous short detours to see the entrances to chasms or viewpoints that are not to be missed. Beautiful beech woods and the regrowth of boxwood give this path a touch of magic. The app will be useful as numerous paths cross at various points.

Description of the walk

Coming from Saint-Girons, follow the left bank of the Salat upstream, reach Eycheil and take the road on the right at the roundabout towards Ouerdes and the Sourroque massif. Cross Ouerdes via the first road on the right, continue along the track and park at the hunters’ hut.

(S/E) Take the track leading down to the left.

(1) Turn onto the track on the right and follow it straight on until you reach a crossroads (elevation 759).

(2) Go straight on and reach another junction at a place called Les Mourères.

(3) Turn right and walk for about 100 m.

(4) Take the path on the right to reach the entrance to the Gouffre des Mourères.

(5) Return to the junction.

(4) Resume the route to the right and continue along the most obvious path.

(6) Turn right again to visit the Gouffre Barroti.

(7) Turn back and take the path on the right. Reach a crossroads.

(8) Take a track to the left, reach another junction about 100 m further on and head left again to follow the track, which makes two wide hairpin bends further on before reaching a crossroads.

(9) Leave the track and take the path climbing to the right towards the cliffs, which has a few steps at the start.

(10) Cross a difficult section where a cable is provided and continue along the path.

(11) Head left and walk off-trail towards the viewpoints over the Poudac du Hibou. Go well round the massif to avoid the sharp limestone pavement.

(12) Retrace your steps.

(11) Take the path on the left and head for the Table des Quatre Seigneurs, the day’s highest point at 1,239 m.

(13) Continue along the path opposite and emerge onto a forest track at the Passade de Bouch.

(14) Ignore this road, continue along the path and reach the Col de la Passade.

(15) Carry on to the end of the path, joining a forest track.

(16) Follow it down to the right to Plagnol de la Plagne.

(17) Turn left, walk for about a hundred metres, then leave the track and climb up to the left to reach the viewpoint.

(18) Return to the track and climb up to the left. Continue to the left until you reach another track.

(19) Head left towards the Gouffre Degaudez.

(20) Retrace your steps.

(19) Set off again to the left. Reach a crossroads of tracks.

(21) Take the track on the right and come out onto a forest road.

(22) Head down to the left and return directly to the car park (S/E).

This hike was undertaken in damp weather with thick mist on the higher ground. Due to the poor weather, crossing the cliff using the cables proved extremely difficult. All the chasms mentioned along the route are well worth seeing, particularly the Mourères chasm. This hike requires neither a map nor a GPS; it is a well-signposted route known as the ‘Cliff Route’, featuring numerous information boards. At point 17, leave the forest track and turn left to take the second signposted route, called “Sourroques en creux et en bosses”, heading towards the Dégaudez chasm. At point 22, we rejoin the forest track, which takes us back to Ouerdes, the starting point for the hikes.
