The start is on the D3A2, heading towards Auphelle. After the sign for ‘Les Hameaux du lac’, continue for 1.6 km on the D32A. Ignore a track branching off to the left and immediately turn right to park in the car park, where you will find a mobile phone mast.
(S/E) On leaving the car park, cross the road and turn left. Follow the D3A2 towards Royère-de-Vassivière for about 200m.
(1) At the bend, turn right; the path leads into the woods and turns left, leaving a path on the right.
(2) At the junction, turn right, then left at the next crossroads. Continue straight on until you reach a sign for the Conservatoire du Littoral.
(3) You can turn left to the small Île de Vauveix, accessible via a footbridge (2km round trip and a walk around Île de Vaux).
(3) On the way back, take the path on the left and continue to the next junction.
(4) Take the path climbing to the right and reach the summit of the Chassagnas Peninsula. Superb panoramic view of the lake and its surroundings.
(5) Head down to the left along the edge of the woods to reach the lakeside. Follow the lakeside path to the right and reach a lane.
(6) Walk past the hamlet of Chassagnas (with the wayside shrine on the right) and continue straight on to return to the car park (S/E).
