The Chassart Plain

Inthe 19th century, the Dumont family founded the Établissements de Chassart, modernised agriculture and livestock farming, and set up a sugar factory following the development of beet cultivation in the region. This was followed by the creation of a distillery and the production of the famous Chassart Vieille Cuvée genever. In 1906, the family name was ennobled to Dumont de Chassart.

Description of the walk

This agricultural plain is the main setting for the walk proposed here, with some beautiful large farms: shortly after the starting point, the farm-castle of L'Escaille, the old farms of Chassart on the way back and the equestrian farm of La Croisette as well as that of La Haye shortly before the finish.
Along the way: the site of the old Chassart factories on the ancient Roman road between Bavay and Cologne, the Marbais wind farm, La Bruyère golf course, the magnificent mill built by the Dumont de Chassart family (now converted into a private residence) and a section of the old railway line that linked Fleurus to Bois de Nivelles.
