The Signed Rock of the Cheire de Côme

A hike entirely in the forest, in the unique landscape of the Cheire de Côme. You will be left to your own devices in this mysterious forest, on small unmarked paths for part of the route, wherethe Visorando app is almost essential. The Signed Stone is an enigma, perhaps you can try to solve it.

Description of the walk

At the Vulcania roundabout, follow signs for Mazaye. About 1 km further on, the road bends left and then right. Ignore the Prés de Côme car park. Immediately after, there is a small circular car park on the right-hand side of the road (you can also park at the side of the road or in another car park a little further on).
Please note! The IGN map is not up to date in this area. Some roads are not listed, while others that appear on the map do not exist or no longer exist.

No signposts

(S/E) With your back to the road, follow the path that starts at the end of the car park on the left. You will reach a junction with a path marked with yellow signs.

Yellow signpost

(1) Turn right. Further on, cross a track.

(2) At a crossroads, follow the small yellowPR®® sign to the left, then turn right immediately. Ignore the vague side paths and continue straight ahead (not shown on the IGN map) to follow the marked trail on the left. You will come to a crossroads on the outskirts of the hamlet of Les Roches. Follow the path on the left.

No signposts

(3) At the next fork in the road, leave the yellow markings and follow the path on the right. About 350 m further on, at the first intersection, turn right. Further on, turn left in front of a lane blocked by branches, leading to the Château des Roches (you can see a tower). You will arrive at a three-way intersection.

(4) Turn left, ignore the vague side paths, and arrive at a clearing.

(5) Follow its left edge, then cross it straight ahead to join a path that climbs up opposite, in the undergrowth. On this section, where the app may be useful, follow the best-marked path. Keep right at each intersection, ignoring a vague path on the left, then a second one that is a little clearer, and a third that is barely visible. You will come to a T-junction with a path.

(6) Follow it to the left. Further on, join a track suitable for vehicles.

(7) Follow it to the left and ignore three narrower paths that branch off to the right. You will come to a three-way intersection and find a yellow marker.

Yellow signpost

(8) Turn right and look for the signed stone a few metres further on. Continue along the path, ignoring two paths branching off to the right, until you reach a junction with signposts, marker 820.

(9) Follow the signs for Prés de Côme on the left. Shortly afterwards, you will see a sort of chasm on the right, set back quite a way, but be careful as the solidified lava flow is littered with holes of varying depths. You will come to a T-junction.

(10) Turn left, ignore a path on the right further on, and arrive at a logging area.

(11) Turn left. At the T-junction, turn right and arrive at an intersection with a wide path, opposite a water catchment.

(12) Follow the road to the right for a few dozen metres, then take the path on the right, indicated by a small yellowPR®® sign. Be sure to follow the yellow markings on this section, especially at a fork in the path where you need to turn left.

(13) Just before reaching the wide path, follow the marked trail on the right. At a T-junction with a trail, turn left and continue to an intersection with directional signs, marker 940. All directions are marked in yellow here. Follow the signs for Les Roches on the left and you will quickly reach an intersection that you passed on the way there.

Without markings

(1) Leave the yellow markings and take the route on the right, in the opposite direction to the outward journey, to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Hike of moderate difficulty, with little elevation gain but many very short ascents and descents. The elevation gain recorded by the app may be slightly underestimated.
Standard hiking equipment

The Visorando app or GPS is almost essential on the unmarked section.

Caution! On the solidified lava flow, avoid straying too far from the paths. There are many holes, some deep and visible, others not.

The solidified lava flow from the puy of the same name is located in the Cheire area. It is a very chaotic terrain, which was initially colonised by birch trees before beech trees took root there in turn. As can be seen in the first part of the hike, this area has been exploited in places: old stone walls indicate that small deforested plots were used for grazing sheep. The tiny stone shelters, more or less renovated, that can be seen along the paths were reserved for shepherds, or gouris.

The Pierre Signée is an enigma. We do not even know when these "signatures" date from. The crosses mounted on triangles could symbolise a chapel and a church, with the arrow indicating the direction of the church. The other carved cross could indicate that the stone itself was a kind of primitive oratory. Some information about the cheire and the stone can be found via these links:
