Description of the walk

From Marsanne, take the D57 towards Mirmande. At the second hairpin bend, above the ruins of the medieval castle, park on the right at the start of a path. Parking spaces are also available in the village.

(S/E) Take the wide, signposted path that starts at the hairpin bend in the road, heading north-north-east. On the right-hand side of the path, you’ll find two benches from which to enjoy the sweeping landscape of the Valdaine. Pass through a gate and arrive at the hiking signpost marked “La Pierre Sanglante 2.1 km”.

(1) Continue straight on. Start climbing, then reach a flat section (ignore the path coming in from the left). Another bench on the right offers another viewpoint. Shortly after passing a field entrance on the right, reach the Col de La Pierre Sanglante (altitude 438 m, hiking signpost).

(2) Take a small path opposite for a short round trip to La Pierre Sanglante (altitude 436 m). Retrace your steps.

(2) Follow the signs for Darne on the right. After a large meadow on the right, you’ll reach the Darne signpost (altitude 460 m). Ignore the small path on the right and the wide path on the left (Yellow Cross), and continue along the very wide path through the woodland. You will reach the Serre de Darne signpost (altitude 480 m); continue straight ahead downhill. Ignore the wide path on the left. At the La Limite signpost (altitude 430 m), ignore the path on the right despite the directional signposting and follow the direction of Trois Croix (despite the Yellow Cross). Look for the Trois Croix signpost (altitude 427 m) on the right-hand side of a very wide multi-directional junction.

(3) Keep to the right and follow the signs for Coste Herbage. Pass a wide path on the right. After a fairly long climb along a very wide forest service track, well-renovated in late 2024, you’ll reach a wide bend to the left with a signpost marked ‘Route Touristique 0.3 km’. Continue along the same very wide track, climbing steeply, until you reach a flat section with a T-junction and another ‘Route Touristique’ signpost marked ‘Pont de Terre 2.6 km’.

(4) Turn left at this junction, following the signpost. Ignore the paths on the right as you round the bends. At the next signpost, keep left, leaving the Pont de Terre direction for the Saint Félix direction. You will reach a bend in the track.

(5) Continue left, heading due south, climbing to Serre St-Félix (elevation 481 m) and reach the car park. (S/E)

Notes

Although this walk is very accessible, there are some very stony and occasionally muddy sections. Good walking shoes are recommended.

The descent after point (5) is quite steep and stony, especially towards the end. Even if it means adding a little extra distance, you might prefer to stay at this crossroads heading towards Pont de Terre and return to the car park via the tarmac road.

Worth a visit

On the way there, there are beautiful views of the Marsanne plain and the high-speed rail line, as well as the mountains.

On the return journey, enjoy the section through the forest, with another lovely view of the village if you choose to continue straight on after (5). An orientation table is located on the right just before the finish.

It’s a pleasant walk along wide, shaded paths, but when you reach the turn-off for the path leading to the ‘bloody rock’, it’s a complete waste of time – a round trip just to see nothing. The stony descent is dangerous and very long.

An easy walk. We met a few other walkers towards the end. There are views at the start and end of the walk. The middle section alternates between woodland paths and forest tracks.

The second part after the bloody stone is less interesting than the first part because you are in the heart of the forest with no view of the surrounding mountains. Otherwise, there are very few people and it may be best to visit on a hot day to enjoy the coolness provided by the vegetation.

Easy hike, little elevation gain, beautiful views in the first part up to the Col de la Pierre Sanglante, but a steep, rocky descent through the forest on the way back to the car park. Avoid this hike in hot weather as there are sunny sections.

A walk taken in fine but cool weather (5–7°C) lasting 2½ hours. The first section is the most pleasant, offering numerous views of the Vercors, the Saou Forest and the Montélimar plain. La Pierre Sanglante is looking less and less ‘bloody’!
The second part was damp and muddy in places. In spring or summer, this section must be more pleasant.
A very fast and stony descent towards the end, but perfectly manageable.
