The Buc Mountain

A lovely walk with no technical difficulty, offering a beautiful view of the Bergiès Observatory, the peaks of the Drôme Provençale, the Dévoluy and the Ventoux in the background. The Montagne du Buc is a favourite spot for paragliding. You can watch the paragliders and, with a bit of luck, the majestic vultures of the Baronnies.

Description of the walk

Take the D546 to the Col de Mévouillon. At an altitude of 889 metres, coming from Mévouillon, turn right onto the Chemin des Chanaux, pass the farm on your right and continue to the paragliding meeting point car park, signposted ‘Pied du Buc’. There are several parking spaces.
Note: The track may not be passable for cars in winter, so you will need to park at the Col de Mévouillon and continue on foot.

(S/E) From the car park, ignore the fairly steep stony track heading due south and continue along the path to the Mourès sign.

(1) Caution! At this junction, ignore the path branching off to the right and the one rising slightly to the left; continue straight ahead. At first, this path is less visible than the other two, but a few metres further on, it becomes a wide track leading up to the Col des Arles.

(2) Leave the path here and take a track that climbs to the left, just before reaching the signpost. This track, which closely resembles the ancient Via Romana, becomes quite steep just before reaching the Col du Lac.

(3) Ignore the path branching off to the left and continue straight on to the junction.

(4) Turn left and walk for about 300 m to the lavender field. Take the path on the right leading to Collet Court, the summit of Montagne du Buc, which is not very visible at first as it runs alongside the lavender field, but widens considerably further on. The scenery is spectacular!

(5) At the summit, enjoy the exceptional views before beginning the descent to the junction with a wide path branching off to the right.

(6) Then turn right onto the fairly wide, winding path, which descends gently to a junction.

(7) Ignore the path branching off to the right and continue left, along the forest track to the T-junction.

(8) Take the path that climbs to the left, then descends slightly to the right. You will reach a track; follow it up to the left and head for the car park (S/E).

Notes

The Buc mountain is a pastoral area: flocks of sheep come here to graze during the summer months.
Do not stray from the route and watch out for sheepdogs.
The hike is fairly easy (effort level 3) – IBP 70; there are no technical difficulties and the risk is fairly low (2).
There are no water sources.
Walking poles are recommended.

Worth a visit

The old Fort de Mévouillon.
Aulan Castle.

We didn’t encounter any technical difficulties on this hike. Although the climb is long, the path is wide and pleasant. The effort is well worth it at the top, with a superb 360° view. I do wonder about the stated duration of 5 hours 30 minutes. We completed it in 4 hours 10 minutes, including regular stops to admire the view, and we’re not exactly seasoned hikers.

A hike offering 360-degree views: the Vercors, the Alps, Mont Ventoux, Sainte Victoire
Impressive vultures soar above the landscape.
The feeling of touching the sky at the top of the mountain.
The climb is steep but well worth it.
In my opinion, the medium difficulty rating is underestimated; I would say it's more difficult than that.

Best done in spring, the hike is stunning, with a 360-degree view from the summit. For nature lovers, there are plenty of orchids to see along the way, as well as vultures.
Please note: between points 4 and 5 there are scree slopes to cross; wear suitable footwear as the stones can roll.
