The Wild Loire from Soubrey

This is a magnificent route starting from the hamlet of Soubrey in Salettes, Haute-Loire, following a re-opened ancient path. The trail runs along the banks of France’s longest river (marked with very discreet blue dots) before returning via the GR®3.

Description of the walk

The start is in Soubrey on the “Route des Quatre Chemins” near the junction connecting the roads to Salettes, Coucouron and Issarlès.
Park in the car park at the Ostal de Soubrey.

(S/E) Walk down the D500 for 150 m and take the first path on the right. After crossing meadows for 300 m, the path enters the woodland, which it will not leave until it reaches the Loire. Gradually, the gentle murmur of water flowing over the rocks can be heard.

(1) Pass close to the old mill, go round it on the left and then head down to the riverbank. Keep quiet so as not to startle any otters or other wild animals that may be present.

(2) Follow the river to the right for 2 km, downstream, following the path. During heavy rain, you will need to use exposed rocks to get round small tributary streams.

(3) Take care on the section along the cliff face, where it is advisable to use your hands for support. You will then arrive at “La Plage”. The pier of an old ferry, which operated until the 1960s, can be seen on the opposite bank.

(4) Follow the path to other beaches where it is a good idea to stop for a drink or a picnic. After crossing a field for 500 m, you will reach La Baleine, marking your arrival at the lower part of Salettes. This spot owes its name to the rock jutting out into the river.

(5) Follow the path for 150 m, then take the path climbing to the right, which turns into a small road. After 600 m, go round the12th-century church, which marks your arrival in Salettes.

(6) Follow the GR®3 (the oldest GR® in France), keeping to the right until you reach the viewpoint at the wayside shrine on the outskirts of the village.

(7) Pass the Viletelle wash house. Then continue straight on for the final 500 m to reach the starting point (S/E).
