The Lesse and the castle trails

Between Gendron, Furfooz and Chaleux, this hike plunges into the heart of the Lesse valley, between limestone cliffs, deep forests and villages steeped in history. The river has carved out spectacular rocks such as the Roche du Curé and the Aiguilles de Chaleux, offering superb views.

The route passes through unspoilt woods, rich in flora and fauna, and runs alongside the Lesse and the Forges stream, a reminder of the local industrial past. Perched castles, including Walzin and Vêves, and the Roman remains of Furfooz complete this landscape where nature and heritage complement each other.

What a wonderful walk! It’s particularly pleasant on a warm, sunny day, as much of the route is in the shade of the trees. After several days of rain, the descent to point 1 is still quite muddy. The stretch along the Lesse between points 1 and 3 is superb, with some truly beautiful scenery. The opposite bank, higher up, offers dizzying views of the steep cliffs. Kayaking season is in full swing, and even when the river disappears behind the trees, you can hear the joyful shouts of children, the calls of the paddlers and the geese protesting loudly, disturbed in their tranquillity. On this fine Saturday, it cannot be said that the paths are completely deserted: many have come to enjoy the sunshine, but the route still gives a real sense of seclusion and connection with the magnificent local countryside. The only drawback is the complete lack of internet coverage along the route, so it’s best to download the app in advance. And the view is splendid: from the heights, you can take in a good half of the distance already covered at a glance.

I was a bit disappointed by what should have been a must-do: the paths were too wide and too easy, and having to walk two kilometres along a tarmac road to get back to the starting point explains my mixed feelings.
