On your right, you will see the Way of the Cross and the steps leading to the hermitage. Do not take them, but continue along the road to the N94.

At the intersection, ignore the signpost on the right and continue along the road until you reach the bend with the dirt tracks, then pick up the signpost again at a place called Grande Tussogne.

(18) Head slightly to the right, not in a hairpin bend. Go downhill, pass in front of a chalet and enter the forest. Ignore the tracks on your right. The marked path turns and climbs.

(19) At the fork (not on OSM), turn right and then keep left. At the crossroads (not entirely on OSM), continue straight ahead. Pick up a sunken path and descend it to the left. Back on a forest path, turn left until you reach the corner of the meadow.

(20) Turn right. Walk along the meadow, with the woods on your right, and climb uphill. Come out into the open. At the road, continue straight ahead and enter Custinne until you reach the crossroads near the church. Change of markings.

There are a few steps to compensate for the difference in height along the Lesse, but no major difficulties. The walk will take around 6 hours.

We take theGR® 129, 575 and 577 trails. Gradual change in some of the markings. Yellow and red markings appear on theGR® de Pays trails. In the future, these will be marked in this way as the corresponding guidebook is reissued or even republished, in particular theGR® 575 through the Condroz andGR® 577 Tour de la Famenne, which we are taking on this route.

From October to December, bear in mind the hunting season.

Worth a visit

During

Halte Royale d'Ardenne: King Leopold II owned the Château d'Ardenne, which he transformed into a luxury hotel to welcome the wealthiest guests at the beginning of the last century. Today, the château has been destroyed, but the station remains, a royal stop that allowed guests to access the establishment directly by train.

Celles: one of the most beautiful villages in Wallonia: collegiate church, Way of the Cross, hermitage...

In fact, I followed part of this hike. My goal was to visit Celles, its collegiate church and its hermitage.
I set off from Gendron Celles station and walked to the village of Celles.
I enjoyed the trail on the plateau, which offers a superb view of the surrounding area.
The GR 129 is very well marked.
I may do the whole hike in June as it is very long.

Thank you for making these information sheets available to download. It allows me to explore the country.

Hello, I had saved this hike in my favourites for quite some time, hoping to do it one day. On Tuesday 27 June, I finally did it! And I'm very happy about it. It was a weekday, so I only saw one other hiker and enjoyed the silence along the Lesse! Taking it easy, it took me 6 hours (including 10' + 5' breaks). As mentioned in a comment, it is possible to do it in 4 hours at 6 km/h, but that is still a bit fast (I used to do that when I was younger). I only used the route on the map. I had no trouble finding my way. It is a beautiful region (even though I don't live very far away: in Mettet). So as not to get to the beautiful "Lesse" section too quickly, I chose to park in Celles and start from the square between (15) and (16). I was already familiar with the "Lesse" section, as it is part of the Adeps walk in Furfooz that I did recently. I wanted to go back there. Your hike has all the ingredients: countryside, woods, rivers, elevation, small scale (not dangerous, at least in dry weather), stairs (180 steps in 3 sections), rocky paths, such as after the lovely surprise (which I won't reveal) at the Gendron crossroads (10). I was amazed several times by the beauty of the landscapes. Parked in Celles, I even had the courage to climb the original Way of the Cross to the St Hadelin hermitage. I finished off with a delicious triple "Esprit" beer on the terrace of Val Joli (70 beers on their menu). I'll definitely do it again one day, adding, if the passages allow and are authorised: before the point (11) at the edge of the woods, descend to the left towards the Lesse, then Chaleux beach, GR 17 and 126, to climb back up to the Chaleux panorama, Rue des Aiguilles de Chaleux, Furfooz and then rejoin the point (11). But then I'll probably have gone over 30 km. I'll plot it on Viso to see... In any case, congratulations! Definitely worth doing...

Very beautiful route (allow 4 hours for a good walker)
Avoid doing it on a Sunday (lots of noise at the start of the route: kayaking) and Celles is extremely busy.

Overall, highly recommended.

Hello zemike0013,

Reading about the narrowly averted "disaster" gave me chills...
I'm glad to hear that nothing serious happened...

and delighted to read that you enjoyed the hike as much as I enjoyed scouting it out and preparing for it.

I look forward to perhaps reading about another hike of yours.

Well done!

&

THANK YOU

There were two of us on this hike and what a pleasure it was!

There weren't many people around because it was a Friday during exam season, and the kayak rentals were just reopening, which was perfect for a peaceful hike :-)

The route was almost entirely shaded by trees, which was perfect in the heat, except for the stretch across the fields, which felt like a desert... The coolness of the woods and streams was just perfect.

The difficulty of the hike is well chosen because the length makes it challenging and there are one or two climbs that you have to tackle, especially towards the end, but nothing insurmountable.

The steps and ladders are not for everyone, though. In fact, my partner almost had a nasty accident after climbing a ladder when she tripped on a root sticking out of the ground and fell, hanging on to a root with her feet dangling in the air above sharp rocks below... it all happened so fast... and even if you're used to it, you have to stay alert.

I wanted to say that the trail is clean; you can see that the local authorities are doing everything they can to maintain the area for walkers while allowing nature to take its course.

This walk is a real treat, to be repeated in different seasons.

THANK YOU AGAIN

Hello everyone,

A compromise has been reached between the municipality of Houyet and the kayaking company for this year regarding the fees for the long descent of the Lesse starting from Houyet.
Kayaks will therefore be available in 2021 from Houyet to Gendron-Gare, from (1) to (9).

A very beautiful hike, varied landscapes and superb 360° views.
The first part is more technical, between Houyet and Gendron-Celles.

Kayaks should no longer bother hikers, as the company organising the great descent of the Lesse river from Houyet has decided to give up due to the high taxes demanded by the municipality.
