The Gleirschklamm Gorge

Park in the car park on the edge of Hinterautalstraße, in Scharnitz.

(S/E) Follow Hinterautalstraße to the Taxi Mair building. There, turn right and follow the road
Then take the forest path on your left; this climbs slightly.

(1) Turn left to follow the path through the woods, crossing a few footbridges but always keeping to the left of the Isar, the river on your left. You’ll pass a playground; keep going straight on.

A little further on, you’ll see a rest area on your right (recognisable by its pond), which will come in handy on the way back! Carry straight on until you reach a fork in the path.

(2) Take the path on the right towards Waissel. After a steep 5-minute climb, you’ll come across a beautiful waterfall on your right.

(3) Head back down to return to the previous fork.

(2) Continue straight ahead on the previous path, which slopes gently downwards. On the Nederweg, you’ll pass the Scharnitzer Alm, an inn on your right. Follow the path and, after a steep descent, you’ll reach a jetty with a table in front of you. The Gleirschklamm gorge trail is on your right.

(4) Set off along this magnificent path. All that remains is to enjoy the 45-minute walk through the gorge to Isartal ForstaBe.

(5) Return to the car park by following the same route in the opposite direction (S/E).

The route is not suitable for pushchairs or bicycles.
Some difficult sections may be dangerous for dogs.
Hinterautalstraße car park: €6 for the day, €3 from midday.
Coming from Seefeld, turn right in front of the church.
You’ll find toilets and a water tap to fill your bottles in the car park.
No major difficulties, apart from a few narrow sections on the gorge path.

Alternative route extension: At the junction, you can continue your hike into the gorge to reach the Amtsage restaurant or the Moslalm farmhouse inn, or do as we did: turn back towards Scharnitz.
On the way back, you can enjoy the relaxation area by dipping your calves and forearms in the icy mountain water; once in, it’s pure bliss!
