Description of the walk

(S) From Château de la Motte (municipal site, parking available), join the D130.

(1) Take the road on the left for about 100m until the first junction on the right. Turn right, cross the Champs Saint-Simon housing estate, then turn right onto a grassy path which joins Rue du Cadran. Take this street to the left, then, at the junction with the D91, take the path opposite.

(2) After crossing the Clérot stream, turn sharply right onto theGR®224. Follow theGR® (red and white markings) as it climbs up the Clérot valley. After 1.5 km, you will cross the D91 and enter the forest, still on theGR®224.

(3) When you reach a junction with a straight forest track leading to Rond de Beuvron, leave theGR® and take the path opposite. After 500m, turn right at the edge of the forest. Near the Maison Forestière des Câteliers, follow the path that turns right into the forest to Rond de Beuvron (about 1.5km).

(4) At this six-way junction, take the second path on the left, which heads straight through the forest towards the south. Continue for about 900m. When the path begins to descend, you’ll reach a junction with a path on the left that descends more steeply.

(5) Take this path on the left. At the end of the descent (150m), you’ll come to the Route Forestière du Grand Val. Turn right onto it. It winds through the forest towards the south-east. At a hairpin bend to the right, it is joined by a path coming from the east. Continue along the Route du Grand Val to the right, which now heads west-south-west.

(6) At a crossroads, turn left onto the road that passes under a railway bridge. After 300m, take a grassy path diagonally to the left that climbs steeply towards the Maison Forestière de la Houssaye. When it joins a road, turn right and cross the D124 heading south-west. Continue along this small tarmac road for 700m.

(7) At a lay-by on the left, theGR®224“Rive Droite” (no markings) joins the road and follows it for 150m before branching off to the right (no markings).

(8) The path starts on the right-hand side of the road and turns right, whilst the road heads left and downhill. Take theGR®, whose red and white markings only become visible again after a few hundred metres. It follows the contour line, bends to the right, crosses the D124 again, and turns slightly left at a junction. Follow theGR® for another 1 km.

(9) Turn left onto a grassy path that leads out of the forest towards a farm. After the farm, the path becomes a track, then a tarmac road. As the road descends.

(10) Turn left at the entrance to the archaeological site of the ruins of Montfort Castle.

Follow the rampart walk which skirts the site to the right. Enjoy the view of the village and the Risle Valley, then take the hairpin bend and follow the path down to the village of Montfort at Rue de l’Ecu. Turn left to reach Rue Saint-Pierre (D130). Turn right onto it.

(1) Take the first street on the left and walk through a housing estate past a wash house to reach Château de la Motte.

Few places to picnic. The best spot is after point (6), on the left behind the railway line.

The route follows the circular path at Rond de Beuvron, with easy access to the car park.
You can have lunch at the end of the walk at the forest picnic tables. There is also a large shelter in case of rain.
In the afternoon, another walk along the Risle.
A very beautiful area.

A lovely walk through the forest on 6 October 2019, with a mix of light drizzle and sunny spells. The paths are pleasant and sheltered from the wind. It’s a shame that the authors of the descriptions on Visorando don’t mention where the picnic tables are located.

A really lovely walk with some remarkable trees and views over the valley. Downsides: tree felling => very muddy ground.

A very pleasant walk. The paths are varied, with very little tarmac.
At point 6, I turned left and the narrow path became passable again, though it remains very narrow for about 20 metres.
However, just before the finish, the path that goes round the ‘Archaeological Site’ doesn’t match the route or the description. So I carried on along the road and missed the view over the village and the valley. No problem, it’s such a lovely walk that I’ll do it again in the spring.

- Start: parking is not permitted in the car park at the Gîte de la Motte. As I know the area a bit, I parked at the Câteliers forest lodge. As a result, I didn’t do the short section between points 1 and 2.
- Point 6: the path that branches off to the left and drops steeply is no longer passable at the end, as there is an impassable thicket of brambles before it joins the Grand Val forest road. Tip: at point 6, carry straight on along the winding path, which eventually joins the Grand Val forest road (and this path is lovely).

Thank you for your hike! A very beautiful forest with a good number of so-called ‘remarkable trees’
Duration = 3 hours 20 minutes with fairly short breaks.
