Saint-Vincent Forest Walk

In the Montfort National Forest, an extended version of the Yellow-marked trail starting from the Saint-Vincent visitor centre, with a higher proportion of unpaved paths. Combining a wide variety of woodland settings, alternating between narrow paths and wide lanes, this route also offers an escape into a typical Normandy bocage landscape.

Description of the walk

Start from the Saint-Vincent visitor centre.

(S/E) With your back to the road at the Saint-Vincent car park, set off along the path that leads into the forest, following theGR® (red and white) and the Chemin du Mont-Saint-Michel. Continue straight on to the traffic lights.

(1) At the crossroads before the descent, turn left, leaving theGR® route. At the next crossroads, turn left again to take the Ligne du Midi, continuing straight on.

(2) Cross the D124 linking Montfort-sur-Risle to Boissey-le-Chatel (watch out for traffic: ensure you have a clear view). Continue straight on until the top of the descent, where you turn right.

(3) Back on the tarmac, follow the small road to the left then carry on straight ahead. At the fork, keep left and continue straight on this small road where you’ll see some interesting half-timbered buildings.

(4) At the edge of the valley, take the sunken path that descends to the left. Enjoy the views over the valley and some majestic trees. Pass under the railway line through the pretty brick tunnel, then head left to follow the Grand Val straight ahead.

(5) At the crossroads, turn left to cross the ford (usually dry) and walk past the field maple (a notable tree marked by the ONF with an information board). Before the tunnel under the railway line, turn right to head up the Allée du Chevreuil (and temporarily leave the yellow markings).

(6) On Allée du Chevreuil, which offers a rather pleasant landscape, ignore the first turn-off to the left and take the long route via thesecond path on the left, following theGR®224. At the edge of the woods, turn left and continue, ignoring the turn-offs to the right. You will reach a fork with a turn-off to the left.

(7) Continue straight onalong theGR®-marked forest track. At the crossroads, keep to the right, following the Mont Saint Michel pilgrimage route, and rejoin the yellow markings.

(8) Cross the D124 with care. Walk straight ahead through the woods before following the small road on the left to reach the Saint-Vincent area (S/E)

Notes

Picnic table at the start.
All shops in Pont-Authou and Montfort-sur-Risle.

Please be aware of hunting days in the national forest from October to February: the route is located in section 2, which is open for hunting on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

After heavy rain, the two fords may be wet. In the event of flooding, helpful hikers have placed large branches across the way: please be careful as they can be slippery.

Alternatives:
(5) You can take a shortcut by going straight through the tunnel under the railway line. Then turn right to rejoin the GR®.
(6) You can turn off onto the first path on the left to reach (7) directly, but this path is very muddy for 200 m (so really difficult).

Worth a visit

* The Montfort State Forest covers 2,000 hectares along the hillside bordering the right bank of the Risle. Very hilly and mainly populated by conifers, this state forest has four visitor centres, including the Saint-Vincent centre in the commune of Glos-sur-Risle. The ONF has published a map listing walking and horse-riding routes: it is available free of charge at the Montfort Tourist Office, open from April to September.

* The Chemin de Saint-Michel: Montfort is a stop on the pilgrimage route linking Rouen to Mont-Saint-Michel (accommodation for walkers at Château la Motte).

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

The passage under the railway line is very muddy. You need to be wearing sturdy footwear.

Thank you for this peaceful walk in the Montfort Forest.
We only came across two cyclists and five or six other walkers, which seems rather few for the area.

A lovely walk in this nearby forest that I know so little about.
Thank you for this route, which takes me off the beaten track.
Perfect for my trail runs

Hello,
Glad you enjoyed the route. I’ve just spotted a small inconsistency in the text, so I’ll be updating it.
That said, the route looks easy to follow: that’s one of Visorando’s strengths.
And as for the number of visitors, I’ve had the same thought about other, more remote trails.
I think people are rediscovering the simple joys of the great outdoors and spending time with friends or family.
It’s one of the positive effects of this health crisis.
I look forward to meeting you or following your posts.
Kind regards.

Dominique

Very pretty paths at the start of the walk, right in the heart of the forest.
A relaxing walk.
We came across lots of walkers and mountain bikers.
