The Dent du Chat circular route from the Hôtel de la Source

A fairly challenging walk on the first section with an average gradient of around 20%. Some quite vertiginous sections, but well secured with cables and ladders.
On the descent, part of the path is poorly marked or unmarked; it is best to have some basic orienteering skills. At the top, superb views of Mont Blanc, Belledone, the Chartreuse, the Bauges, etc.

Description of the walk

From Chevelu, head towards the Col du Chat. After just under 2 km, turn right onto the Chemin de la Source.
Ride to the end of the road. When you reach the houses, take the path on the left which leads to a designated car park.

(S/E) Take the yellow-marked path which climbs towards the Dent du Chat. Follow it to the sign for “Vacherie de Champrovent”.

(1) Ignore the return path ahead and continue left towards the Col de la Vacherie.

(2) At the pass, turn right and continue climbing until you reach a four-way junction.

(3) Turn left, towards the summit of the Dent du Chat. The route is exposed but very well secured with cables and modern ladders.

(4) At the top, the view is magnificent; enjoy it, then head back down to the four-way junction.

(3) Head towards Molard Noir, which lies opposite. Two information boards await you at the summit. The view is once again incredible.

(5) Then head towards the Relais. Follow the ridge path. After about 1 km, past the mast, the descent begins; you’ll find the paragliding launch site, as well as the Relais des Aigles. Walk to the restaurant on the D42.

(6) Go down the steps on the right, alongside the restaurant. Head right for a few dozen metres along the road, then, after the left-hand bend, take the path on the right towards the western orientation table, which you’ll find when you reach the viewpoint, at the left-hand bend of the D42.

(7) Enjoy the view, then follow the road down towards St-Paul. Walk carefully along the D42 for over 1 km, ignoring the paths branching off to the left. You will then see, on your right, a sign pointing towards St-Jean de Chevelu.

(8) Climb over the parapet and head down the path, due north. After 400 m, you’ll reach a forest track. Turn right and keep going in that direction until the end of the track.

(9) The path is barely visible. Continue north-north-east, then north. After about 500 m, you’ll reach another forest track.

(10) Follow it to the right, go round a hairpin bend to the left, then another to the right. After the next hairpin bend to the left, walk for about 80 m; you’ll see a hut below on your right. Walk past it and take the path leading up to it.

(11) Walk past the hut. The path is barely visible at first, but then widens. Follow it to the junction with the sign for La Vacherie de Champrovent, which you passed on the way up.

(1) From there, follow the route you took on the way up in the opposite direction, continuing downhill to the car park (S/E).

The hike took 7½ hours, including breaks, with my 10-year-old daughter. We bought water at the refuge (they carry all their water up themselves, so they don’t give it away, and there are no water sources on the route) and spent the night just above the hut (half an hour from the end, for the pleasure of camping). Apart from the summits, the route was entirely in the shade; very pleasant in hot weather.
My daughter loved it, and so did I.

A very pleasant hike for October, with lots of forest and beautiful scenery at this time of year. The colours and light were perfect, and the view from the top was magnificent, just above the clouds with a view of Mont Blanc. The climb warms you up a bit, and the descent is very gentle, with no difficulty.

Hello,
Hike completed on Tuesday, 16 September 2025. This is a hike I have done many times. For me, it is a "hybrid" hike that has everything: kilometres, elevation gain, a few non-dangerous challenges and views... when the sky is clear...In reality, the views are rare but exceptional, let's admit it: the Dent du Chat, the Mollard Noir and the Belvédère. The hike often takes place in the forest. And the passages through the fir trees are not great. Hence my somewhat mixed opinion. The only point of the descent is to complete the loop. For me, it's a training hike to do either at the beginning of the season or after 15 August because, otherwise, the views are crowded. Today I came across seven people!
On the descent, you really need to follow the description and the route because it's very tempting to stray. What's more, Geoprtail isn't entirely up to date
Thank you for this post.

A truly beautiful hike. There were quite a few people around the Dent du Chat, the Mollard Noir and the pass on the D 42. On the descent, you need to be careful to stay on the paths. My GPS recorded 14.3 km, 992 metres of elevation gain and a walking time of 6½ hours. Given the length and the elevation gain, it’s a good idea to have some hiking experience.
Happy hiking to you all. Best regards
Jean-François Lalevée
