Description of the walk

The Doriaz car park is located at the top of the commune of Les Déserts. The road is easily accessible. The hike starts at the bottom of the car park.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, head towards the Grange de la Paleu, pass it and you will come to a fork with no name or signposts.

(1) Turn left. Signs will quickly confirm that you are on the right track. Continue until you reach the Col de la Doria.

(2) Turn right and follow the signs for "cascade". From here, the path descends significantly. Stay on the main trail.

(3) At the pretty Doria waterfall, cross the concrete bridge over the Doria River. The path will start to climb again. Continue until you reach a crossroads.

(4) Continue straight ahead. The "Croix du Nivolet par les échelles" is now signposted. Cross the Nivolet and the mountain pasture.

(5) Leave the mountain pasture via the path that climbs straight up. A steep climb with some difficult sections awaits you. Cables, ladders and various handholds are permanently in place. Before reaching the cross, make a detour via the western promontory. Retrace your steps slightly rather than risk straddling the fault line.

(6) Croix de Nivolet. Continue along the path, keeping to the right, until you reach a four-way junction.

(7) Turn left, passing in front of a concrete shelter. Descend a dirt track, which slopes gently and steadily, with few markings.

(8) Here you can take a 5-minute detour to the right for a final view of the Belledonne Massif.

(9) Viewpoint. If you have made this detour, you can also access a via ferrata. Retrace your steps.

(8) Continue the descent to the fork in the path you took on the way up.

(1) Turn left and head back to the Doriaz car park (S/E)

Notes

The waterfall is the only source of water.

The hike is mostly shaded. However, it is probably not very accessible after rain.

The ladders are a little technical (but easily manageable by young teenagers) and not too vertiginous on the way up. However, don't expect to get through with a dog (unless you carry it on your back!).

If you really want to, the route can be done in the opposite direction (https://www.visorando.com/randonnee-la-croix-du-nivolet-depuis-les-favres/) but the ladders will probably be more difficult and more impressive on the way down.

Very beautiful hike.

I don't recommend it for people who are prone to vertigo: I took a friend there who found the section before the ladders and the ladders themselves mentally challenging (though physically it wasn't difficult at all).

Other than that, it wasn't too crowded because we did the hike on a weekday, outside of the holiday season. Be aware that I've done it several times and I know it gets very busy and there can be a lot of people at the summit (especially at lunchtime).

Thank you for your feedback.
Personally, I find vertigo much more problematic when you have to look down than when you have to look up, but that's a matter of personal sensitivity.

The route should be done in the opposite direction to the one suggested, mainly to make climbing the ladders easier.
This section should not be taken lightly. The ladders and stone slabs can become slippery and potentially dangerous if they are wet, if it has rained the day before and if autumn leaves have fallen. It's fine for people who are comfortable with this type of activity (I do via ferrata), but I wouldn't recommend it for beginners or anyone who is prone to vertigo.

I looked at the reviews before setting off and did the route in reverse, which was a good decision.
The entire route is shaded by trees, which is a real bonus in hot weather and to avoid the scorching sun.
The waterfall is the ideal place to stop for a bite to eat.
The ascent is then continuous and quite steep but without any major difficulty.
The ladders at the end of the climb are quite impressive and should be avoided with children. Finally, once you reach the Croix du Nivolet, the well-deserved reward is a magnificent view of Belledonne, Chartreuse, Chambéry, Aix-les-Bains, the lake... In short, a splendid view, but beware if you're a daydreamer like me, because you have to come back down!

A beautiful hike with superb panoramic views, especially at the cross where the view is breathtaking. The ladders are impressive, especially for those prone to vertigo. The small waterfall provides a welcome touch of freshness, and the 200-metre climb at the end of the trail really puts your legs to the test!
