The Croix de Varzéron as seen from the Gorges de l’Arly.

Cool and refreshing! That’s the key phrase to describe this walk. Even during a heatwave! In such conditions, do make sure to tackle the climb in the morning. Roughly 95 per cent of this walk is in the shade. And then there’s that footbridge, about a hundred metres long, spanning the Arly torrent. Not to mention the torrents and numerous waterfalls you’ll come across on your way to the village of Cohennoz, with its very unique eco-museum, which is well worth a visit.

Description of the walk

This walk starts from a large car park on the RD1212, about 3 km from the Ugine exit, heading towards Megève. To be precise, this car park is situated at the very end of the dual carriageway, on the right-hand side, near the Arly Footbridge.

(S/E) Take the footbridge to cross the Arly Gorges, heading towards Cohennoz. Cross the Nant Blanc for the first time; about 200 m further on, the path takes a hairpin bend; continue to the next hairpin bend. Leave the path for a few metres to admire a beautiful waterfall which remarkably cools the surrounding air.

(1) Return to the path and continue to the village of Cohennoz, near the church, behind the town hall: you can’t go wrong. Take the time to visit the church and the eco-museum (by prior booking with the town hall).

(2) Take the steps on the right, opposite the church, then continue a few metres to the right along the road, and take a path on the right (Chemin du Sauzier), following the signpost for “Croix de Varzéron”. A few dozen metres further on, a path branches off to the left.

(3) Leave the track and head up this path, which leads onto a quiet road; follow it to the right. After the bridge over the Nant Blanc, the road takes a wide bend to the left and reaches the hamlet of Le Peuchaix. Continue to the end of the bend.

(4) Just before a fire hydrant, take a path on the left, then a track leading to the sign for “La Pêche”.

(5) Take a sharp left-hand bend onto the track and continue to the sign for “Le Vernay”.

(6) Continue to the right along the path until you come out onto a track. Take this to the right for a few metres until you reach the “Sous-Varzéron” sign.

(7) Turn sharply left; the path leads to the Croix de Varzéron and the refuge of the same name.

(8) Take a break, then turn back and follow the route you took on the way there, in the opposite direction, back to the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

Don’t miss the church in Cohennoz.

Also worth visiting is the Cohennoz Eco-Museum, by booking at the town hall (04.79.37.33.82), and its collection of miniature mountain tools made by schoolchildren in the early 20th century.
