The Piolit ridge from the Sapet road

A pleasant walk in the Sapet National Forest, at the foot of Piolit (2,464 m), which marks the end of the Embrunais transport layers. The Piolit ridge offers superb views of the Embrunais, Lake Serre-Ponçon, the Gap valley, Dévoluy, Champsaur and the Écrins massif.

Description of the walk

From the village of La Bâtie-Neuve, take the D214 (Les Borels, Les Aubins, Les Césaris) on the left to Les Borels. At the crossroads in the hamlet, continue left on the D214 (Les Aubins, Forêt du Sapet). Pass Les Aubins. After 3.8 km, pass the Maison Forestière du Sapet on your left and, just after the hairpin bend above it, take the Route Forestière du Rioudon on your right. Follow it for 2 km and park in the small car park just after the bridge.

(S/E) Before the bridge, take the path on the left that winds its way up above the Torrent du Sapet (signposted Le Piolit 2464 m, 2h30, yellow line). Cross a first valley and wind your way up the wooded ridge.

(1) Continue along the path on the right (towards Le Piolit) and ignore the path on the left (Les Plates, Courneilles, Coste Belle). Continue above the last mountain pines in the alpine grassland and, via a long uphill traverse and crossing two combs (small rocky outcrop to cross in the second comb), reach the grassy ridge of Le Piolit.

(2) Descend the path to the right on the ridge (yellow line) and leave the path that climbs to the left at Le Piolit (also yellow line).

(3) Continue straight ahead on the ridge, ignoring the path on the right that leads into the forest (yellow cross).

(4) Go up the path on the right, ignoring the path that descends opposite (yellow cross). Cross the flat area (raspberry bushes) and continue on the forest path, now on the north side.

(5) Continue downhill opposite, ignoring the poorly marked path that climbs to the right.

(6) At the crossroads, take the path on the right and continue down the hillside.

(7) Cross the forest track and continue on the path opposite, which descends to the Rioudon Forest Road.

(8) Take the road on the right to reach the car park in less than 100 metres (S/E).

Worth a visit

Le Piolit is recognisable by its pointed pyramid shape, rising to 2,464 metres. The mountain is classified as a Natura 2000 site. Although it is not one of the highest peaks in the Écrins massif, its summit is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful viewpoints, offering a 360° panorama of the Gapençais basin, Lake Serre-Ponçon, Champsaur and the Écrins massif.
