Description of the walk

Park in the car park at Place de la Liberté.

(S/E) With your back to the market hall, head towards the church and follow Avenue de Toulouse. Follow the road down until you cross over the Ayguebelle.

(1) Turn right onto the dirt track leading to the allotments and the Ayguebelle green corridor. Pass the entrance to the allotments on your left and walk alongside them; at the end of the allotments, head down towards the path running alongside the Ayguebelle. Follow the course of the river, passing the path with a wooden footbridge on your right, until you reach thesecond footbridge.

(2) Cross this footbridge, walk round the fishing lake, then cross the river again and continue to the right, following the course of the Ayguebelle. Pass under the new Saint-Lys bypass and continue until you reach a path leading uphill on the left.

(3) Take this stony track on the left, which becomes a tarmac road (Chemin de Cantegraille) as you reach the first houses. Continue along this road until you see the roundabout on the D632.

(4) Take the road on the left at the junction leading to the roundabout, then cross the Route de Tarbes carefully at the pedestrian crossing. Turn left and cross the access road to the shopping centre using the protected crossing.

(5) Follow the footpath alongside the D632. Cross Avenue Lucie Aubrac, walk past the secondary school on your right and continue to the roundabout at the new Saint-Lys bypass.

(6) Cross carefully at the protected crossing, then turn right onto the new footpath which has been created to link up with the dirt track cut off by the bypass.

(7) Turn left onto this dirt track and follow it to the end. Then turn left onto the tarmac road leading to Juste and join the footpath running parallel to the departmental road, which was created to provide pedestrian access to the secondary school.

(8) Turn right onto the footpath towards Saint-Lys. Continue along this path until you reach the church. Cross the road at the pedestrian crossing to return to the car park where you started (S/E).

Worth a visit

The centre of Saint-Lys is a bastide with a beautiful, recently restored market hall and a lovely church visible from afar. There are numerous shops in the town centre, including a café with a terrace overlooking the market hall.
Children’s playground next to the skate park.
The green corridor running from Saint-Lys to Fonsorbes along the River Ayguebelle, with a fitness trail on the Saint-Lys side.

A well-shaded walk on the first part. To avoid the road, we turned back halfway. There weren’t many people about; it was a lovely walk.

A nice little walk along the Ayguebelle. The return journey along the road is uninteresting and at times dangerous, with roadworks blocking the footpath. As already mentioned, Place de la Liberté is in a Blue Zone with a 1 hour 30 minute time limit. You can park behind the church, on the way to the museum.

We’ve just done this circular route this morning (in reverse, starting along the road and finishing in the cool by the river, as it was already 27° at 10am). So the first part along the road is flat and rather uninteresting. As soon as you reach the woodland, it’s nice and cool and you’re surrounded by nature. There isn’t much to see, but it’s a pleasant little walk featuring the fishermen’s lake and the remains of a watermill. The walk took us 2 hours (note: the car park opposite the church is a blue zone with a maximum stay of 1h30).

For a walk with children, I’d recommend this route rather than the “Coulée verte de l’Ayguebelle” section, which can be done as a short circular route including the lake. There’s also a maze in the woods for children and adults alike. There are picnic tables in this area.

A simple, easy route – perfect for a bit of fresh air!
Suitable for all ages.
We’ll do it again, but this time we’ll take the route in the opposite direction so we finish amidst the greenery and vegetation.
