Description of the walk

Start from thesecond car park at Espeluche Town Hall. (Gravel area)

(S/E) Turn right after the medical centre. Head towards Rue Serre du Coulet opposite, go up the street and turn left onto Chemin des Hochettes. Then turn right onto Chemin du Clos and continue straight on along Chemin de l’Oratoire, then turn right onto Chemin du Château d’Eau

(1) At the crossroads, leave the track and take the path that climbs alongside the fence, keeping to the left-hand path at all times.

(2) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead and stay on the path until you reach a wider track.

(3) Follow it to the right and, at the two stone markers, turn right. Walk a few metres and you’ll reach the wooden post at l’Échinière.

(4) Turn left towards Monastère d'Aiguebelle and walk for about 200 m.

(5) Leave the track and take a grassy track leading down to the right, pass the gas pipeline (fenced-off area) and then continue straight on at the crossroads. At the second gas pipeline (fenced-off area), join a track.

(6) Head up to the left and, at the next crossroads, turn right then immediately left along the gas pipeline route towards a white scrap metal post. Pass under the power line, join a small cross-country path and take it to the right, towards the undergrowth, until you reach the Croix de Siméon.

(7) Follow the track to the right; at the large electricity pylon, ignore the paths to the right and left and continue straight on towards the red markings on the pine tree.

(8) At the bottom of the path, turn left (MTB signpost 7) and follow this signpost to the bottom of the path. Join the track and turn left. Follow the track down to the tarmac road and continue down the road to the next junction.

(9) Turn left for a 2 km round trip. Follow Chemin de Bruno, pass in front of Moulin de Mariman, then turn left onto Chemin de Barbara. Continue to the ruins of Chapelle Barbara.

(10) Retrace your steps.

(9) On your return, take the Chemin de Fontvieille. At the ‘no entry’ sign, ignore it and carry on straight ahead. At the red postbox, leave the tarmac road and take the path that climbs towards the gate. Go through the gate and head for the old village of Allan.

(11) Go under the arched gateway and continue along the path that climbs to the right. This turns left and runs alongside the rampart. Turn right under the arched gateway, climb the steps and arrive in the heart of the old village. Cross the courtyard and go under the arched gateway. Head diagonally to the right, passing under another arched gateway.

(12) Follow the path to the left, which takes you back to the signposted trail, and head down towards Allan.

(13) At the junction, take the Chemin de Maranne on the right and continue along this pretty little road for 1.5 km.

(14) Continue straight on along the Chemin de la Biscarat. Pass house no. 535, then the field of truffle oaks on your right, and turn left at the scrap metal gate. Walk down the meadow alongside the trees. On the descent, take the path that leads into the undergrowth on the right, then the path that climbs up the bend to the right. At the bottom of the path, at the junction, turn right. Continue straight on until you reach a gravel track. Turn left to join Chemin des Hochettes.

(15) Turn left, then follow Rue de la Colline to the right. At house no. 29, on the small square, turn left then continue along the small path to the right. Between the two houses, go under the small porch on the right then head down Impasse du Coulet. At the post boxes, turn left towards the town hall to return to the car park (S/E).

A lovely walk on a sunny and warm Easter Monday
The village of Old Allan was very busy that day, with little peace and quiet
A stretch of tarmac to get back from Allan to Espeluche; the final bit from the barrier was lovely

A lovely walk enhanced by a visit to the ruins of Old Allan. Next time, I won't walk back and forth from point 9 to point 10 to see the chapel, which will save me 2 km of walking.

We have removed the return trip to the ruins of St. Barbara's Chapel, which we were familiar with and which are not particularly interesting, thereby reducing the length of the route. It is possible to eliminate the loop to the Virgin of Liberation (road) by taking the small path that crosses the first car park when leaving the old village of Allan and rejoins the route further on before the spring.
However, the route through the woods is very pleasant and shaded. A visit to old Allan is a must. Thank you for this hike.

Despite a strong mistral wind, the route is well sheltered. We didn’t go to the chapel because there’s too much tarmac. Old Allan’s tour was much appreciated.

Some sections of the route are less frequented as they’re overgrown with grass and thorny brambles (I’d forgotten my secateurs) due to this year’s wet spring, but they’re not completely blocked. It’s a pleasant route that I’ve done several times as it’s nearby. Nothing to report.

A pleasant walk starting from Espeluche; although the 2 km round trip along a tarmac road to see the ruins of the Barbara Chapel (which hasn’t been restored and lacks any information – a shame!) is a bit of a slog, the rest of the walk is lovely, and above all the old village of Allan is magnificent and well worth spending a good while exploring; what’s more, the view over the plain is stunning; Highly recommended.
