La Cascade de la Pissoire waterfall from Étang des Sangsues

The Cascade de la Pissoire waterfall is one of the best known in the Vosges. It can be accessed from Haut du Tot. You can round off your visit by exploring the surrounding peaks, such as Moyemont and Chèvre Roche, both of which offer remarkable panoramic views of the region. The first part of the route is uphill to Chèvre Roche, passing by the Fontaine Baptistminicandré fountain. After Chèvre Roche, the route winds its way up to Moyemont, passing by the Giant Fir Tree, the Lambia Cross, the Pissoire Waterfall and the village of Haut du Tot. The final part of the hike takes you to the Balcons de la Hazelle and the Étang des Sangsues.

Description of the walk

The route starts at the Étang des Sangsues car park

No signposts

(S/E) With the car park on your right, go up Rue du Moulin. Pass two paths on your right, then follow Route du Haut du Tot until you reach the right-hand bend.

Blue signpost

(1) Turn right towards Chèvre-Roche (or Chèvre Roche). At the end of the road, turn right onto Route de Chevreroche. Continue to the hairpin bend, ignoring all intersections.

(2) Keep to the far right to stay on Route de Chevreroche. At the next junction, turn left then right into the cul-de-sac. Almost at the end, take the path that starts on the left. This path climbs gradually and leads to a junction. You can visit a Saracen staircase on the right. Otherwise, continue climbing until you reach a track.

(3) Cross the track and climb up opposite to the road. Cross the road, then a track, before walking past a house on the right to rejoin the road.

(4) Continue on the path that starts almost opposite, on the other side of the road. The path climbs more steeply, turns right and arrives at a fork.

Green triangle markings

Take the track on the left to see the Baptistminicandré fountain.

(5) Return to the road.

Blue easel signpost

Cross the road to take the path towards Chèvre Roche. Cross the road twice more, then rejoin it a third time.

(6) Turn right towards the meadows. Follow the road to the pass.

(7) Follow the track completely to the left. At the shelter, climb to the right towards Chèvre Roche, passing close to a picnic table.

Blue Ring markings

(8) At the summit, turn right onto the Route Plaine Cleurie. On the descent, ignore a path on the right.

No markings

Continue straight ahead until you reach a three-way junction.

Blue Chevalet markings

(9) Take the track opposite towards the Chalet du Haut des Charmes (a sign indicates the direction to take, but the chalet no longer exists). Turn onto the track on the right, then at the three-way junction, leave the mountain bike track on the left. When you come back to it further on, turn right until you reach the Sapin Géant crossroads.

Blue Ring Markings

(10) Descend the right-hand track. At the fork, turn completely right, then quickly left, to reach the Sapin Géant, a magnificent tree over 40 metres tall.

(11) Return to the plateau.

Blue Chevalet markings

(10) Follow the track on the right. Continue along it until you reach the crossroads with the remains of the old Chalet du Haut de la Charme.

(12) Continue straight ahead, with the Lambia Cross on your left. At the next fork, turn right and pass in front of a private property. Follow a small road and then reach a fork.

Red Ring Markings

(13) Take the downhill track towards the Cascade de la Pissoire waterfall. Follow this track until you see the waterfall on your right (at the next stream).

No markings

Start at the foot of the waterfall.

(14) Return to the track and turn right.

Red Ring Markings

Follow the path on the right, which climbs steeply towards Haut du Tot. When you reach a track, turn right to reach a crossroads.

(15) Keep left towards Haut du Tôt. Then quickly turn right. Keep going straight at each crossroads until you reach a wide track.

(16) Continue straight ahead to reach the village of Haut du Tot. At the crossroads, turn right to reach a café and a church.

(17) Continue for a few metres and then, at the end, go down Route du Haut du Tot to the first path on the left.

Yellow ring markings

(18) Descend this path. When you reach the road, head towards the stream (Blancfaing), before climbing up the other side to the Croix des Hêtres crossroads.

Blue signpost

(19) Head left towards Moyemont. After a wide right-hand bend, leave the road and take a track on the left. Then keep right three times until you reach the fourth crossroads.

Green Triangle Markings

Climb to the left, then stay left again and then right to reach Moyemont and its orientation table.

(20) Turn back, turning left, then right and left to pass in front of the buildings. At the road, make a slight first turn left then right to head towards Lemont. Reach the houses.

(21) Continue downhill opposite. The track makes a very wide left turn and crosses another track: turn right, then left at the road. Cross Lémont and reach a junction with Route du Lémont.

(22) Turn right. At the junction with another tarmac road, head towards the stream. Cross the stream and follow the same road until you reach the "Give Way" sign.

(23) Turn left until you reach a shelter.

Red diamond markings

Just opposite the shelter, take the path between the houses towards the Pont des Séchaux bridge. Leave the wide track opposite and descend to the left towards the bridge.

(24) Continue along the path until you reach the road: descend to the right and you will come to a fork.

Blue ring markings

(25) Go up the path on the left. Then quickly take a path on the right towards the Balcons de la Hazelle. Leave two paths on the left, then a third to reach the second balcony.

(26) Continue along the path, then descend to the right towards the first balcony. Follow the path. At the crossroads, turn left towards a viewpoint.

(27) Turn back and turn left. Keep going straight at the crossroads until you reach the car park.

No markings

(S/E) Head left towards Étang des Sangsues. Start walking around the pond, keeping to the left. Stay along the pond until you reach a footbridge. Continue along the second pond until you reach the end.

(28) Continue along the path that runs alongside the two ponds, ignoring the paths to the left and right. At the junction on the way there, head straight ahead towards the car park (S/E).

A beautiful route linking two major attractions in the area: Chèvre Roche and the Pissoire waterfall.
The main challenge is at the start, reaching Chèvre Roche and its stunning view over the valleys (the 7 churches).
After that, the route is fairly flat and downhill to the stunning Pissoire waterfall. A short steep climb at the end and a gradual ascent to Haut du Tot, a pleasant mountain village. A detour via the Moyemont orientation table before the descent through the forest towards the hamlet of Lémont. A tarmac section, but a gentle one, leading to the final climb to the Hazelle balcony and its view of Vagney.
The route is rated as difficult, no doubt due to its length and total elevation gain of 700 m, but it presents no major technical difficulties.

Magnificent views of the valley. There were a few tarmac sections, but you had to go that way to reach the hiking trails. The sun was shining, but it was cold with winds of over 50 km/h. Fortunately, the bar at the top of the hill was open, so we could enjoy a hot coffee and a blueberry tart.

We completed the route on a beautiful autumn day. We enjoyed the views and had a picnic at the top of the hill, where there are numerous tables.
We didn't find this walk difficult, despite the elevation gain.
