The Rochebrune Battery

A circular route in the Hurtières massif to the north of the Belledonnes massif.
This is a route that explores the region’s military and mining history.
Yellow markings on trees and rocks, numerous directional signs with little or no elevation information.

Description of the walk

Park near the Mining Museum.

(S/E) The path starts directly opposite the footbridge leading to the Museum. It passes under a pinkish-coloured building (a former school and museum), then goes to the left of a chapel, climbing a grassy slope to a track.

(1) Follow the track to the right to reach the road. Walk up the road for 100m.

(2) At the bend, head straight ahead onto a track and follow it for 180m; when you reach a hairpin bend, turn left. 150m after the hairpin bend, leave the track and take a path.

(3) Head up through the woods. This path starts at an altitude of 940m. It will soon cross a track (not shown on the IGN map) which you should ignore as you continue the steep climb.
The path will eventually lead out onto a wide track; follow this for 30m to the left and then take the level track to the right.

(4) You will soon reach a covered picnic table, followed by the entrance to the Sainte Barbe Mine; a visit to this mine takes 1½ hours, and tickets are on sale at the museum; needless to say, the access path acts as a natural filter for potential visitors.
After the mine, continue along the track, which soon becomes a path; this begins a new climb before leading onto a wide track.

(5) Then turn left onto the track. Follow this track for a kilometre to reach the small building of the Batterie de Rochebrune.
This building has been restored and now serves as a refuge; the esplanade in front offers unobstructed views.
For the rest of the route, the path descends through the forest; take great care not to stray from the path, although the markings are quite frequent (every 10 to 15 metres), and remain vigilant as the descent is sometimes steep.

(6) At the Col du Petit Cucheron, join a wider track; take it to the left. On the descent, take the shortcut via the Place du Petit Cucheron.
After this, the track takes you gently back to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

Important note: Up to the Rochebrune Battery, the route is easy to describe; however, from Rochebrune onwards, it is a forest trail along a ridge that is not strictly level; care is required to follow the path and watch your step; this section is not recommended in wet weather.
A water point is indicated on the route 1 km from the finish.

A brilliant walk down memory lane. With its blend of historical heritage, natural beauty and stunning views, this hike has everything to appeal to keen walkers! Halfway along the route, the Rochebrune battery offers the perfect spot for a picnic break with views of the surrounding mountains. The descent along the ridges is steep but magnificent.

This is a very pleasant walk through the woods.

I agree with the previous reviews. The difficulty level is moderate. The initial climb is quite steep and accounts for most of the elevation gain on this walk.

After the Roche Brune refuge, you follow a ridge to the Col de Petit Cucheron, which can be tricky in wet weather. (I’d avoid this with young children...)
Note that 5–10 minutes after the refuge, you’ll come to a junction where the pass is no longer signposted; you must then continue along the ridges, following the yellow markings.

This hike is nonetheless very enjoyable; we recommend it

Hello,

An important point to note, in my opinion, regarding the difficulty: it’s actually quite challenging, if not difficult!
The climb is really steep; the section along the ridges isn’t difficult, but I wouldn’t recommend it for families with children.

Apart from that, it’s a very pleasant walk with a beautiful view at the highest point!
Most of the time it’s through woodland with no views.

You can extend the hike towards the Col du Grand Cucheron via the ridges and return via the forest road.

Jérémy.

This hike is described as "easy", but personally I find that some sections, such as the return along the ridge, aren't actually that easy. Not necessarily recommended with children.
The estimated time of three hours is really without any breaks
