From the Maurienne Valley, head to the village of Montsapey, then to the valley floor.
After Tieulevé, the road becomes a good dirt track; park at the Pont des Rouelles.
At the start, there is a large information board about the hikes in the massif.
The destination is straight ahead, heading north-east.
Right from the start, you can either:
(S/E) Head into the mountain pasture, leaving the path on your left that beckons but leads to the Grand Arc – which is a different route altogether – or continue along the track leading to the Rouelles farm.
The two routes join up quickly.
(1) After the junction, follow the trail; the markings aren’t plentiful, but there’s no need to daub the mountain when the route is unambiguous.
(2) Cross a stream: before leaving the mountain pasture, then the winding climb through a more wooded area.
A double high-voltage line also passes over the pass.
At the pass (1,791m), there is a signpost and panoramic views, including once again Mont Blanc and the surrounding peaks: the Grand Arc to the left and Mont Bellachat to the right.
Go blueberry picking, but not before 15 August.
(3) Descend via the ascent route to return to the Pont des Rouelles car park (S/E).
