The lower Douron valley

Starting from the village of Pont Menou, follow the River Douron to its estuary between the headlands of Locquirec and l’Armorique. After enjoying a few views of the open sea, you’ll return via the higher ground of the valley. The route passes through numerous hamlets, some with beautiful houses, chapels and fountains, as well as ancient Roman baths. You’ll also enjoy stunning views of the Tour d’Argent and Île Blanche manor houses.

Description of the walk

At Pont Menou, park in the small dirt car park at the Base du Douron. Coming from Lanmeur, it’s on the right as you enter the village, near the old school.

(S/E) In the car park, look out for a sign pointing towards the ‘Route de Pont Menou’ and follow it along a grassy path (not shown on maps) which descends and, further on, enters the woodland before running alongside a stream. You’ll come out onto a road.

(1) First turn right then left, and follow the road to a crossroads marked by a cross. Stay on the road heading to the right, cross the bridge over the Douron (there’s an information board about otters) and you’ll soon reach the junction with a marked GR® red and white trail (the GR® isn’t shown on the map).

(2) Follow the path to the left, which soon approaches the Douron. Further on, pass a huge pine tree on your right, then cross a wetland area. You will eventually join another path.

(3) Follow it straight on, cross a road, reach the end of the Douron estuary, and at the Fork in the road, take the one on the right to gain some height. Further on, you’ll come to a very pretty spot (picnic table) with a fountain.

(4) Turn right towards the Chapelle Saint-Haran for a short round trip to the chapel, then retrace your steps.

(4) Return to the path along the Douron estuary to the right, passing close to “L’oreille du silence”.

(5) Further on, ignore a path on the right and you’ll come to a road; follow it straight on. On the other side of the Douron is the beautiful manor house, La Tour d’Argent. At the T-junction, turn left to join a busy road with a hiking signpost opposite. On the other side of the Douron is another remarkable manor house, L’Île Blanche.

(6) Cross the road carefully, then turn right towards Saint-Michel-en-Grève, keeping the coast on your left until you reach a left-hand bend in the road, at a junction with directional signs.

(7) Cross the road carefully and follow the street to the right on a round trip to the nearby Sainte-Barbe Chapel. Follow the path to the right of the chapel, which leads through the woodland to the pretty Sainte-Barbe Fountain, then retrace your steps and carefully cross the busy road again.

(7) For a second round trip, at the hiking signpost, follow the GR® straight on towards Saint-Efflam, skirting the coast on your left. The path climbs and comes out overlooking the ancient Roman baths at Hogolo (information board).

(8) You can continue along the path to Grève des Curés for a clearer view of the open sea.

(9) Then retrace your steps back to the road.

(7) Turn right and, following the route in reverse to the one you took on the way there, follow the road on your left towards Locquirec, with the Douron on your right, until you reach the hiking signpost.

(6) Carry on straight ahead along the road towards Locquirec to cross the bridge over the Douron.

(10) As soon as you leave the bridge, leave the GR® and turn left onto the GR® de Pays de Morlaix, marked in red and yellow (the white gate is open; you are permitted to pass through the Tour d’Argent park). You will now follow this GRP® until you reach your destination. Follow the path, go round the back of the manor house and continue along the road to reach the hamlet of Linguez, then turn left at the junction to reach the chapel. Continue following the GRP® markings along the road on the right, which soon becomes a path. Pass a wash house and continue along a poorly maintained path that runs alongside farm buildings on the left. The condition of the path improves shortly afterwards, with a few sections of wooden duckboards.

(11) At the junction of the paths, continue along the GRP® to the left. Pass a very beautiful beech tree. Keep going straight on along the GRP®, ignoring two field paths on the left. You’ll reach the end of a road.

(12) Follow it straight on. At a cross, take the grassy path to the left. Pass a wash house and come to a road.

(13) Take a short detour: follow the road to the right to see two fountains, then retrace your steps.

(13) Follow the road to the right, towards Traon Joie, which soon becomes a footpath. At the junction with a track, turn left then immediately take the road to the right, which soon becomes a track. You’ll come to a road at the hamlet of Pluscaouen.

(14) Continue straight ahead along the track, ignoring the paths branching off to the sides, until you reach a road at a place called Quélumec.

(15) Follow it straight on, then, at the right-hand bend, take the grassy track on the left. Shortly afterwards, ignore the path straight ahead and follow the GRP® to the left. Further on, wade across a stream. You will eventually reach the end of a street in Pont Menou, Créac’h Coat Nevez.

(16) Follow this road; at the junction, continue along the road to the left, ignoring the path to the right. At the next junction, take the road to the right, which joins a wider road – follow this straight on. Turn left at the first road to reach the car park at the Base du Douron (S/E).
