Description of the walk

Park at Montsoreau in the Arceau car park.

(S/E) Exit the car park and take the street on the right to reach Rue des Mazières.

(1) Turn left, keep left at the three-way junction of the cemetery and continue straight ahead for just over 1 km.

(2) Make a short detour to the left to see the dolmen, then rejoin the route. At the crossroads, turn left towards the high-voltage power line to reach the Manoir de Mestré and the Ecomuseum.

(3) Take the road on the right after visiting the soap factory, if you wish, and continue along the path until you reach a hairpin bend in the woods. Descend to the left, heading south, towards a place called La Desgrière.

(4) Continue straight ahead, pass the crossroads, then take the first path on the left (PC71) leading to Socraie, which you reach via Rue du Peuil.

(5) Turn right, then right again to follow Rue des Coteaux, which leads to Rue de la Socraie. Follow this road to the right until you reach the crossroads. Turn left, join the GRP® Saumur-Val-de-Loire and arrive at the RD947.

(6) Cross it with extreme caution to take Rue des Granges Asnières opposite: yellow and red GRP® markings. Continue to the Grangenières houses, turn right into the cul-de-sac and continue along the small, barely visible but very pleasant path that joins Impasse de Beaulieu.

(7) Turn left. Cross Rue des Perdrielles and continue straight ahead along Rue Robert d'Arbrissel. At number 21, take the passage on the right that leads to the picnic area. Continue to the left, towards Fontrevaud Town Hall and Saint-Michel Church. Cross the small square, heading to the left.

(8) Go around the Royal Abbey on the left and turn right onto Rue Saint-Jean de l'Habit. Turn left onto this street, then right.

(9) Take the dirt track on the right about 50 metres before the cemetery. Walk along the abbey ramparts and follow the path to reach the Notre-Dame de Pitié Chapel and the GR®3.

(10) Take the GR®3 on the left, enter the Bois de la Ponière and walk along a military zone. Continue to Carroi de Brion, cross the crossroads and go to the three-way junction 200 metres further on.

(11) Leave the GR®3 and take the path on the left towards Le Pile de Pierre Recueillie des Champs. Cross the Vallée des Grottes and continue to the edge of the hamlet.

(12) Take the road on the left towards Le Bardeau. Once at the crossroads, take a short first turn right then left towards La Trochoire and head for the hamlet, with its chapel and dovecote on your right.

(13) Take the road opposite towards La Roncheraie, turn right at the crossroads, then continue straight on to the D7.

(14) Cross very carefully and continue straight ahead, following the sign for "Panorama". At the crossroads between the power lines, turn right to reach the viewpoint and the orientation table.

(15) Continue left, parallel to the Vienne river, following the signs to Montsoreau. Come out onto Rue des Perrières and go straight ahead.

(16) First turn left then right and follow Rue du Puits Saint-Michel, walking alongside a wooded area on your right.

(17) Cross Chemin des Bazilles. Avoid going down the narrow grassy path (not very visible) opposite. Come out onto Ruelle des Ouches and turn right.

(18) Turn left onto Ruelle de l'Église Saint-Michel, continue along Chemin du Coteau until you reach the three-way junction.

(19) Keep left, leaving the town hall on your right, and follow Ruelle Bussy d'Amboise. Then turn right onto Ruelle de la Motte, then left onto Rue André Obey, which leads to the D947.

(20) Cross at the pedestrian crossing and take Rue de l'Église opposite. Before reaching it, cross the Arceau (stream) and immediately turn left onto the path leading to the car park (S/E).

Notes

This route is accessible in all seasons as it mainly follows paths or small roads with little traffic, dedicated to cyclists.

It must be very charming in all seasons. Refreshment points (water and provisions) are available in the villages. The markings are not always clear due to the multitude of colours (GR®, GRP® and PR® and various others). A map is essential if you are not familiar with following a trail.

Worth a visit

Many sites are of historical interest: Montsoreau, Fontrevaud, Candes Saint-Martin.

The troglodyte dwellings and caves carved into the tuffeau stone are fascinating. The views of the right bank of the Loire, the confluence of the Vienne and the Avoine power station are exceptional, so be sure to bring your binoculars.

To make the most of this area, pick up information at the Maison du Parc in Montsoreau.
