Karreg an Tan (Roche au Feu) and the countryside around Gouézec

Two loops in Gouézec: at an altitude of 279 m, one of the highest points in the Montagnes Noires, the Karreg an Tan summit offers a beautiful 360° panorama of the Aulne valley, the Monts d'Arrée and the Bay of Douarnenez.
Its name comes from the fact that, during the Norman invasions in the 9th century, a lookout would light a fire there to warn the population, which could be seen from across the Châteaulin basin. Back at the car park, a second loop leads through the countryside in the lower part of Gouézec.

Description of the walk

Parking behind the church and near the town hall in Gouézec (signposted).

Yellow markings (very old)

(S/E) With your back to the town hall, go up the small street that turns left twice and leads to the stadium. Pass the water tower and continue north-west along the small sunken path lined with a stream that tends to spread out in winter. You will arrive at a communal road near the place called Toull ar C'harront.

(1) Cross it and continue along the dirt track at the edge of the woods for about 600 metres. At the top of the track, turn left and follow the wide path along the hillside, which offers a magnificent view of the Châteaulin basin. Pass along the edge of two pine woods and reach the end of the road near a house.

(2) At the signpost, turn right for a steeper climb and, at the next signpost, turn left into an area of heathland (slightly flat). Cross an area of gorse, then go around a pine forest.

(3) Turn slightly left into a more open area and you will begin to see the summit. Keep your eyes on it, as there are several tracks due to the passage of mountain bikes.

(4) Pass close to a rocky outcrop on your right, which offers a view to the south, and arrive at a fork at the base of the rocky peak.

Off the marked trail

Ignore the path on the left that goes around the summit and continue straight ahead to reach the summit by climbing through a passage in the schist and using your hands (no major difficulty except in wet weather).
At the summit (279 m), enjoy the vast panorama over the Aulne valley, the Mont d'Arrée to the north and the Bay of Douarnenez to the west (beautiful orientation table).
Find a passage to begin the descent, quickly arrive at wide wooden steps and rejoin the marked trail.

Yellow markings (very old)

Continue the steady descent along a wide path that leads to a car park (information board).

(5) Cross a small road, continue opposite into a grassy area with picnic tables and turn right, then left to follow a path through the countryside between the fields, which descends towards the Raouennig farm.

(6) Turn right then left, heading north, towards the D41.

(7) Follow the road to the left towards the village and pass Sainte-Anne Primary School.

(8) Go up to the left into Rue de l'École, which becomes a one-way street. At the end, turn right to return to the car park near the church.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, walk down towards the church, enter the fenced area of land, go around the building on the right (beautiful calvary) and exit through the triumphal gate.

Yellow markings (very old)

Follow Rue du Stade to the left, pass the cemetery and continue along the main street, taking the passageway on the right for pedestrians and bicycles. Continue past a housing estate on your right until you reach an HTP public works workshop.

(9) Turn right at the gable of a blue house into a cul-de-sac towards Gomoal. Before the farm (old sign), turn left onto a wide downhill path and follow it straight ahead.

(10) Before the Lesvez farm, turn left onto a grassy path (old sign). This path runs alongside a wooded wetland and leads to fields. At the old sign, turn right to go up a wide path between two fields and reach a small road.

No markings

(11) Turn right onto this road, pass the Garz al Lern farm, ignore the farm access roads on the left and right, and pass the Feunteun Vir farm. Continue for another hundred metres or so.

(12) Turn right onto a path that passes near the water treatment plant and continue straight ahead until you reach the street opposite the church. Turn right for about 50 metres and turn left up Rue de la Forge.

(13) Turn left, enter the media library park and continue to the car park (S/E).

Notes

I have classified this hike as moderate because the climb to the summit of Roche au Feu may be a little tricky for some people.
Choose a day when the weather is clear to better enjoy the view.
In winter, the final ascent and descent can be slippery.

The two loops can, of course, be done independently. For the full route, follow the order of the description.
