Hohneck - Altenweiher Lake

This route will allow you to discover the landscapes of the Hohneck massif with beautiful views of the Munster valley and you may even spot chamois on the slopes of the snowfield trail.
Please note that some sections of this hike are particularly difficult, especially the descent from Rainkopf and the ascent from Séestaedtle to Kerbholz. Avoid this route in wet weather, as the rocks are particularly slippery and a fall could be fatal.

Description of the walk

The hike starts from the car park at the top of Hohneck.

(S/E) Head south-west towards Kastelberg, following the path parallel to the road.

(1) As soon as you start climbing, keep the fence on your left. At the point where two fences meet, continue straight ahead on the path.

(2) 200 metres further on, you will pass close to the source of the Moselotte on your right. At the next crossroads, where the Auberge du Breitzhousen is signposted, continue along the path on the left.

(3) When you reach the white path, follow it to the left for about 50 metres until you reach the first bend. Then take the path on the right towards the Refuge du Rainkopf-Louis Hergès. When you reach the refuge, go around it on the right and descend for about 150 metres, then take the path furthest to the left, following the yellow cross markings. After crossing the metal footbridge, the descent is exclusively on rocks until you reach the shores of Lake Altenweiher.

(4) Describe the instructions from the crossing point here.

(5) At the end of the dam, turn right onto the tarmac road. After about 50 metres, leave the road and enter the forest on the left, following the blue cross markings. At the first crossroads (another 50 metres or so), turn right and start the climb towards Kerbholz. Ignore the various paths on either side.

(6) At the crossroads, at the edge of the forest, continue straight ahead towards Kerbholz.

(7) At the white path, about 50 metres further on, take the small path opposite you, slightly to the left, marked with a blue cross.

(8) When you reach Kerbholz, take the opportunity to admire the view of the valley and the Petit Hohneck. Continue your route by avoiding the house and, once on the other side, take the path that climbs to the left. Be careful, as there are few markings in this area, but you must continue climbing. At the first crossroads, continue climbing to the right towards the Auberge du Kastelberg.

(9) At the inn's car park, turn right onto the white path and after the left-hand bend, take the path on the right, marked with a yellow cross, towards "Sentier des Névés".
Follow the path for about 3 kilometres, keeping the cliff on your right, and rejoin the path you took at the start.

(1) Turn right to reach the summit of Hohneck and the car park (15-minute climb) (S/E).

Thank you for this hike, which we found very interesting! The landscapes were magnificent and varied. Despite it being the summer holidays and the superb weather, this route wasn't too busy (apart from at the top of the Hohneck and the lake shores, of course). I disagree with the comment that the end is uninteresting: the view of the Hohneck, the Petit Hohneck and the Spitzkoepfe is definitely worth it!

A very beautiful hike thanks to the diversity of the landscapes. A beautiful view of Mittlach on the Alsace side and Hohneck on the Vosges side. The snowfield trail at the bottom of Hohneck is always pleasant and very popular.
Altenweiher Lake is quieter and more relaxing, and well suited for a snack break. Don't be put off by the hike's difficult rating if you are properly equipped with shoes for walking on the rocky trail down to the lake. The climb back up to Hohneck is gradual on a smooth path, with the option of a break at the Kastelberg farmhouse inn. However, it would be a shame to cut straight across to Kasterberg, missing out on Kerbholtz, which offers a beautiful view of Hohneck.

Superb hike! Everything you could want: diversity, just the right amount of physical exertion... In short, a big thank you!
Only the end isn't much fun, but a little detour to the Spitzkoepfel makes up for it.

A pleasant route. Very well described, except for the difficult section. As on many trails, you need to keep a close eye on children when there are steep drops. No difficulty apart from this need for vigilance. I was more concerned when I saw some clearly inexperienced climbers coming out of the Spitzkoepfe ridge at the end of the walk... but then again, that's a different route...

A beautiful walk between the ridges and the undergrowth.

The climb from Seestaedtle to Kerbholz is not easy. We encountered a light shower at this point and you do need to be careful as the rocks become very slippery.

Otherwise, it's a very beautiful route; the chamois are always there in the morning on the rocky slopes.

A superb walk with very varied landscapes once you leave the ridge. Highly recommended!
We actually came across some chamois in the undergrowth near Kerbholz at 11:30 in the morning!
I found the risk to be lower than described (for someone with sure footing).
