Hautes Côtes de Nuits between Chevannes and L'Etang-Vergy

This is an easy hike in open terrain with beautiful views of the Hautes-Côtes. It is an ideal walk for a half-day in autumn (the vineyards are magnificent) or winter (the terrain is very passable).

Description of the walk

From Chevannes, park at the top of the village near the equestrian centre, which stretches on either side of a small road used by theGR®®7.

(S/E) Cross the equestrian centre and follow theGR®®7, marked in white and red, taking the path that joins the D109 at the entrance to Collonges-lès-Bévy.

(1) Turn left onto the road, pass in front of the castle, then turn right at the next two junctions, Rue Haute and then Rue en Boulois, to cross the village. Reach no. 15.

(2) Leave the road and follow the path to the right to reach Bévy.

(3) Turn right. At the next fork, follow theD109B to the left until the first left-hand bend.

(4) Leave the road and go right then left to reach the copse. Turn right and follow theGR®® which is rather poorly signposted at this point. Head straight on between the fields, then cross a wood and continue downhill to the Etang Vergy and reach the end of the Chemin de la Croix.

(5) Head downhill to the right, then cross the Grande Rue and continue straight ahead along Rue de la Folie. Reach number 5.

(6) Turn left onto Chemin de Vergy, staying on theGR®®. At a house a few metres further on, turn right and follow the path uphill towards Butte de Vergy. Keep going straight on, ignoring the paths to the right and left.

(7) When the path veers left and joins a small road, you have reached the Abbey of Saint-Vivant, situated halfway up the hill at the edge of the forest overlooking Curtil-Vergy. Then follow the road to the right, leaving the mainGR®® trail.

(8) Just before the tennis courts, take the sharp right-hand bend (Rue de l'Abbaye de Saint-Vivant) and head down to Curtil-Vergy, continuing straight on to the end of this street.

(9) Turn right (D109B) and join the D35.

(10) Cross the D35 with care, continue left for about 100 m then turn right onto the D109, towards Messanges. At the three-way junction ahead, keep left, cross the village, straight on, going uphill. Pass a road on the right and keep heading west-south-west until you reach the top of Chevannes. At the entrance to the riding centre, turn right and return to the starting point (S/E).

I’ve rarely come across such a vague, if not downright inaccurate, description, but we’d been warned and the sat-nav did the job perfectly; from Saint-Vivant onwards, we relied solely on it.
That said, the walk is delightful, with its views and villages; it was very peaceful on this weekday, all the way to the Etang Vergy
Thank you

A very pleasant walk to discover the typical landscapes and villages of the Hautes-Côtes.
The descriptions are not always very precise, but with GPS tracking there is no problem.

A very beautiful walk in autumn with magnificent panoramic views.
It's true what it says about point 3: the signposting is poor. I would even say there are no signposts at all. I spent over 15 minutes looking for it...
There is an unmarked section between points 5 and 6. After the climb, when you reach the vineyards, you have to find the small path running above the gravel path that leads to the Abbey. I couldn't find any signs.
It might be worth mentioning in point 8 that the climb up to Chevannes is on a tarmac road.

I really enjoyed this route, but the description needs to be revised. We were able to get back on track twice by taking shortcuts once we stopped following the GR. The weather was very changeable, with rain and sunshine. This hilly route is very pleasant.
