Stud farms and châteaux from Savigné-l'Évêque

A region once densely populated along the ancient road from Le Mans to Évreux, and an important market town under the Ancien Régime, Savigné has long been favoured, due to its proximity to Le Mans, by the city’s notables, who have built or restored bourgeois houses and châteaux, sometimes on medieval seigneurial sites. Thus, as you follow the route, you will see Nuyet, dating from the late18th century, or, from the19th century, the châteaux of Le Rocher (now the town hall), Mortrie and Le Mesnil, where a major stud farm is located.

(S/E) From the car park, walk along the River Morte Parence for 700 m until you reach the footbridge.

(2) Take the dirt track on the right for 800 m. At the road, turn left then right to join the Chemin de la Marcaderie.

(3) Follow the small road to the left. Leave the road on your left and continue along Chemin de la Marcaderie until you reach the high-speed rail line. Take the path on the right and follow the railway line for 700 m. Join the RD20.

(4) Cross it (take care) to reach Chemin de la Tuilerie, located opposite. Continue along the small road then along the path for 500 m.

(5) At the crossroads, you can take a 2.5-kilometre detour by continuing straight ahead. Otherwise, turn right and then right again when you reach the road. Pass the Rousselière farmhouse, leave the road and turn left, then immediately right behind the crash barrier. Head towards the top of the hill and continue for 800 m, then cross the D301 (take care).

(6) Continue along the small road and path for 1 km. Walk alongside the high-speed rail line on the left, cross the stream and then the Vive Parence: there is an alternative route. Turn right, go under the railway bridge and head left. Take the second path on the right and walk alongside the hedge until you reach the road.

(7) Turn right onto it and follow it for 1.3 km to La Petite Houssaie.

(8) Turn right onto the grassy path (private property). Follow the hedge then the river to the RD20. Cross it (take care) by going left then right and take the stony path towards the Haras du Mesnil. Wind your way through the Haras de la Chaussée. Keep right at the fork in the road, then take the second left at the next fork. Pass Les Grands Poiriers, cross the stream and continue right at La Genettière before carrying on to the road.

(9) Take the road on the right to head back towards the village (take care). Cross the Savigné l’Évêque bypass and pass close to the car park. Take the second entrance on the left of the car park.

(10) Keep to the right, go round the schools via the small lane to reach Rue de la Libération opposite. Turn left onto Grande Rue, take the footbridge and turn right to follow the river upstream, then return to the start (S/E).
