Great loop via the Trinidad ridges from Lumbier

This loop from Lumbier takes you to a hermitage, a ridge trail with fine views, two mineral arches and the Foz de Lumbier. An alternative to the small loop starting from the paying car park at Foz de Lumbier, the first part of which is not very interesting.

This hike is for experienced hikers only.

Description of the walk

Arriving at the Lumbier entrance from the freeway, at the traffic circle, take the direction
of Foz de Lumbier.
Cross the bridge over the Salazar and, just after the bridge, turn left towards the campsite
and swimming pool.
Drive past the Azpea bodega, the Iturbero campsite and park in the free, well-shaded car
park by the pool.

(S/E) Return to the road leading to the campsite, and after about 100 m, turn left onto a slightly uphill concrete track. Shortly afterwards, leave the concrete track as it bends to the left and go straight ahead on a track that passes a house. Reach the Way of the Cross that leads to the Trinidad hermitage.

(1) Start the Way of the Cross here, climbing steeply. At the VIII cross, the path comes to a Y-shaped fork; continue along the Way of the Cross, turning right (the track on the left also leads up to the hermitage). Reach the Ermitage de la Trinidad. Enjoy the view from here.

(2) Take a narrow path uphill, marked by numerous red dots. Follow the Cresta de la Trinidad to the summit. At times, the path runs along the edge of the cliff. Reach the summit, marked by a cylindrical geodesic marker. Follow the path around the summit to the right, following the red dots. We soon reach a 5-m chimney (approx. 50 m) equipped with a chain, which takes us off the ridge.

(3) Climb it to rejoin the steeply descending path and reach the first arch in the cliff, the Arco de Liroz. Do not cross the arch, but head back to the left. Follow the base of the cliff in short ascents and descents, and you'll soon see the second arch below. Join the wall and go right through a short scree to reach the Arco de Lumbier.

(4) Cross it and head straight downhill right at the arch, following the red dots. Continue downhill, passing the wild boar shooting posts. The path descends to a track parallel to the high voltage power line, take this track to the right.

Note: we cut across a cattle track at the end of the vegetation, so the GPS track is slightly different from the description.
Reach a crossroads just above this line.

(5) Turn left to take the small loop itinerary, where a signpost indicates the "Aparcamiento" small loop parking lot and Foz de Lumbier. Follow Foz de Lumbier along the track, which is signposted in green and white. Just after a hairpin bend, a post indicating Foz de Lumbier invites you to leave the track.

Leave the track and take a path leading steeply downhill to an olive grove. At the field, fork right along a recently-built path that winds down to the old railroad line.
Continue right on this flat track, which is the Camino Aragonés from Pamplona to Sanguesa. Reach a tunnel marking the downstream end of the Foz de Lumbier.

At the entrance to the tunnel, a path on the left leads to a ruined bridge, El Ponte de Jesus, destroyed in 1812 by French troops. Nice view of the Foz de Lumbier exit.

(6) Pass through this 206 m-long tunnel, cut into a curve, which makes it particularly dark.
Then climb slowly up the Rio Irati to a second tunnel, 160 m long, located upstream of the Foz. Reach the exit of this tunnel.
Please note : between the two tunnels, there are a number of departures to the left, allowing you
to descend to the Rio and cool off in the (cold) water flowing down from the Pyrenees.

(7) Continue along this track to reach a paying car park lot. About 100 m after the car park, turn left onto a path leading to a building. Join a new track, turn right and continue to the bridge over the Salazar.

(8) Do not cross the bridge, but cross the road and continue along a path on the left-hand side below the road towards the swimming pool. Further on, on your left, you'll see a Romanesque bridge.

(S/E) Rejoin the road a little before the Bodega Azpea, continue on the road to the parking de las Piscinas.

Notes

This hike passes over a ridge where the path skirts the cliff and a 5 m vertical chimney to descend (II, II+).
This hike is not suitable for people prone to vertigo.

There is only one watering place at the start of the little loop at the exit from Foz de Lumbier, which is almost at the end of the hike.

The Foz de Lumbier is very popular in summer, as it's easy to get to from the paying car park, and families with baby carriages, bicycles, etc. make the return trip. The rest of the route is much less popular.

The presence of a void, passages where you have to put your hands, a narrow path in an environment of prickly plants with no real shade, mean you need to be well equipped with shoes, poles, plenty of water and avoid shorts.

Catering available in Lumbier, at the Iru-Bide hotel restaurant, among others.

Worth a visit

- Ermitage de Trinidad: Since the 19th century, the penitents of the Los Cruceros brotherhood have climbed up to the hermitage, traditionally dressed in black and carrying a cross on their shoulders, on Trinity Sunday in June.
- Foz de Lumbier: The Foz de Lumbier is a deep gorge cut by the Río Irati through the limestone massif of the Sierra de Leyre. It is 1.4 km long, and the maximum height of the cliffs reaches 140 metres. The 40-hectare site was declared a nature reserve on April 10, 1987. Griffon vultures, Egyptian vultures, bearded vultures and golden eagles nest in the reserve.
The track running through the Foz de Lumbier is an old railroad line built for the El Irati train, which linked Pamplona to Sangüesa and Aoiz, and operated from 1906 to 1955 to exploit the forest resources of the Irati massif.
- Foz d'Arbaiun: Iso viewpoint. The Foz d'Arbaiun is the largest and most imposing canyon in Navarre.
From Lumbier, it's a 20-minute drive. Take the NA178 road to Ochagavía and go to the Iso viewpoint. This gorge, carved by the waters of the Rio Salazar, is inaccessible on foot, as there are no footpaths in this protected area. It can be seen from the Iso viewpoint, a platform overlooking the precipice, where you can appreciate its true grandeur.
Nearly 6 kilometers of walls up to 400 meters high have earned the Arbaiun canyon the titles of Nature Reserve and Special Bird Protection Area.

A very beautiful hike (April 2025)
Both aerial and ending in a canyon

To be done in dry weather
Avoid with young children, but teenagers can do it!
a small "climbing" part with the chain but easily surmountable

the canyon section is much busier.

we recommend this itinerary +

Very nice hike on 24/04/23 in fine weather. Perfect description of the route. The best part is the ridge between (2) and (4). Between (3) and (4) it must be difficult in wet weather if the rocks are slippery as the descent is steep. The return after the tunnels from (7) is a little less pleasant, but you have to get back! Absolutely no-one on the route up to (5), with a few rare encounters after that.

A very lightly used route as you climb along the Way of the Cross until you reach the cretes: magnificent scenery and views! We're higher than the vultures and can see them just after the hermitage. The last part joins the Foz de Lumbier greenway, so it's very busy, but still a lovely route. A very nice hike!
