Grand tour of Mourre Nègre from Auribeau

This hike takes you to the highest section of the Luberon ridge. 360° panoramic views. The route is often shaded by holm oak forests and some beautiful pine forests, which is pleasant in hot weather. Several open sections offer views to the south or north. This very natural hike is fairly easy, except for the slightly significant elevation gain, but this is intentional, intended for those who are not afraid of a little effort.

Description of the walk

The route followsGR® andPR® trails almost everywhere. Markings are fairly rare, but junctions and tricky sections are fairly well indicated.
YellowPR® markings
Park in the car park south of the village of Auribeau, signposted from the main street.

(S/E) Walk down from the car park along the access road and take the path on the left under the trees. Walk alongside the lavender fields. The path is paved at the start and then climbs a little more steeply. You will reach a good forest path just south of the Chapelle Saint-Pierre. Walk up the path on the left for a few dozen metres. At the end of the bend, take the path on the left which climbs and crosses the path. Climb up to the left of a small quarry. Return to the path at the next hairpin bend and follow it for a few metres before leaving it again.
ThePR® crosses the path one last time.

Not marked
(1) Follow this good path to the right, called Piste d'Auribeau, to the ridge. Very quickly, the view opens up to beautiful vistas to the north and north-west. Reach the Col d'Amourralhadou, with a cistern on the right.

YellowPR® markings
(2) Be careful here: complex crossroads of trails and farm tracks.
Take the third path on the right, which descends towards the south-west. Don't miss the fork in the path 150 metres ahead, a few metres before a small aqueduct (visible on the right of the path). This path is marked by a small cairn andPR® signposts. Begin a fairly steep descent through the Vallon de la Glacière.
Reach the bottom of the thalweg at a place called Vallon de la Fayette, where you will meet theGR®9.

Red and whiteGR® markings
(3) Vallon de la Fayette: Be careful here, as it is tempting to continue straight ahead on the wide path.
Turn left onto theGR® trail, which is clearly marked. Continue down a long descent, then climb back up a well-marked path, which is sometimes eroded into a small, steep-sided gully. Continue alternating between ascents and descents to reach the trail junction at Vallat de la Mayre.

(4) Please note: you must then turn sharply and take the path that climbs back up towards the north. Climb up before turning right downhill. The path turns into a track near the Fermes les Courbons, which you will hear from the crowing of roosters and the barking of dogs as you approach.
Follow this track through a beautiful pine forest, which improves in quality as you progress. You will arrive at a crossroads of forest tracks on a sort of pass.

(5) Turn left to reach the Couleton crossroads, a sort of sandy clearing in the pine forest.

(6) Leave thePR® which branches off to the right (barrier) and continue straight ahead towards the north-west on theGR® which climbs more or less in a straight line in the first section before making a few large zigzags on the south slope of the Luberon, which becomes steeper. You will come out on the ridge at the Col La Basse des Cabrières.

(7) Turn left, west, and follow the ridge on theGR®92. Beautiful views over long, open sections. Arrive at a pass at the foot of the Luberon summit, Le Mourre Nègre. Climb to the summit for the view and return to the pass.

(8) Find the right path and follow it to the pass junction before Jas Brémont.

YellowPR® markings
(9) At the pass, just before crossing a power line, take the path that descends rapidly to the right, almost due north. It is not very visible and the markings are almost completely faded, but the path, which descends quite steeply, is easy to follow. After a large curve to the left, join the Vallon de la Font Jean de Martin.
Descend to reach a long rocky bench on the left and the end of aPR® trail on the right. After the rocky outcrop, take a long curve to the left to quickly reach two houses just before the car park (S/E).

I did the hike in the opposite direction, following PfMC's advice. Honestly, I think it's about the same in terms of difficulty, but the beginning (in the direction of the description, from 1 to 3) has little shade, so it might be a good idea to do it at the start of the walk when it's not too hot yet. Between 3 and 7, there is plenty of shade, so you're protected from the sun, but there are fewer views. You can't have everything! I was pleasantly surprised to see the box trees in very good health, which is unfortunately rarely the case in the north of the Luberon where the box tree moth is rampant. All in all, it was a rather pleasant hike, without any technical difficulties, but with a good length and a good elevation gain, and, at this time of year, I only encountered a total of five hikers along the entire route.

Beautiful hike, reliable advice. A steep climb at the start, but the view at the end is superb.

Great hike, the advice is reliable. We did the hike in reverse and enjoyed descending facing the valley rather than climbing up this path. The directions are precise enough to be read backwards. In addition, the descents are easier in reverse, and the climbs are steeper, which is a plus for inexperienced knees.
After a fairly gentle first half (4 hours 15 minutes), we picked up the pace towards the end and finished in 7 hours 45 minutes.
Very pretty scenery, and the shaded forest sections are very pleasant in the hot August weather. A short detour to the Mourre Nègre ridge is also worth the effort.
No technical difficulties.
Thank you for this beautiful hiking route.

When arriving in Auribeau, be sure to follow the signs for "Parking du Mourre Nègre" (the car park entrance is to the right of the "L.Peysson" sign).
Start the hike in yellow towards "Crêtes du Luberon". The path is partially hidden by vegetation.
At point 3, the GR on the left is clearly marked, but after a very short descent, I mainly took a very long climb.
I really enjoyed this magnificent hike, which took me 7 hours and 15 minutes.
I will do it again in the future, but with one change. At point 7, I will take the second path on the right (which I know well), then left at the next bend. This will take me to Marauvière, then to the bottom of the Vallon de la Font Jean de Martin.
The landscape is prettier there.

The description is extremely detailed and leaves no room for error.
The only downside is that the section between points 1 and 2 is not very interesting (wide, open track).
Apart from this section, it is a very pleasant hike offering magnificent views on a clear day.
There are no technical difficulties to report.

A big thank you to Slinky: his directions are very precise and I can set off on the hikes he suggests with my eyes closed, using only the printable version of the route. I've never got lost. The time indicated is very generous, which means there are no nasty surprises.
A very personal and general wish: hikes that are recognised as "dog-friendly" should be identified as such (with a little dog emoji, for example). This avoids surprises such as obstacles that are impassable for a dog, or finding yourself in a nature reserve where dogs are not allowed, etc.
Thank you to Simba, for example, who travels with his dog and paves the way for me.
And thank you for this wonderful site that offers miles of happiness!

Very beautiful hike, varied terrain and vegetation, stunning views.
A few comments: the car park for the start is not easy to find, follow the signs for "parking du mourre nègre" (Mourre Nègre car park), it is after the cemetery, the entrance is not signposted, it is to the right of the "aire L Peysson" signpost and the no entry sign.
The path at the start is marked in yellow with "crête du Luberon" on the signpost.
Thank you for this magnificent hike.
