Grand Piton du Salève - Grotte du Diable

During this hike, you can admire the views of Lake Geneva and the Jura from La Thuile, then from the Grand Piton. You’ll take a short detour to the Grotte du Diable. For three-quarters of the hike, you’ll be sheltered from the sun.

Description of the walk

Access: from Geneva/Annemasse/Chamonix/Bellegarde, take the A40 to the Saint-Julien-en-Genevois exit, then follow the D1201 towards Cruseilles. You’ll soon spot a sign for “Maison du Salève” just before the Col du Mont Sion. At the roundabout, turn left onto the Route de Pomier to reach the Parking des Promeneurs (Caution: bumpy track, large potholes in places, drive at walking pace).

(S/E) Here you have two paths to choose from; take the one heading north-east, called "Chemin des Petites Croix". Enter the forest directly via a slight incline and you will then see a path branching off to the right with a Red Cross painted on a tree.

The path soon becomes quite steep, but you can take a fork to the right to make the slope gentler. Keep following the Red Cross markings carefully. You will then reach a large boulder, which you should go round by passing in the middle and then veering to the right (caution: slippery path). Pass in front of a wayside shrine and enjoy an unobstructed view of the Jura. After a long straight stretch, you will reach a junction.

(1) Turn left to continue along the Chemin des Petites Croix. Still in the forest, the slope levels out until a bend offers an unobstructed view of Lake Geneva. Continue climbing, then take the path on the left as you leave the forest.

You’ll soon reach a track where you’ll have a magnificent view of the Jura, Lake Geneva and the northern slopes of the Salève. You’ll soon spot the Thuile farm.

(2) Just before the farm, follow the signs for “Le Grand Piton”, which you reach via a long, straight stretch with a very gentle gradient. Head to the Col des Pitons car park.

(3) Continue to the left to reach the summit of the Grand Piton.

(4) Take the same path back to the Col des Pitons.

(3) Cross the D41a road, head straight ahead and follow an almost level path to the Grotte du Diable.

(5) Head straight up and keep to the left of the path until you reach the car park of an old abandoned restaurant. Cross the road, take a small path opposite through the middle of the forest, which quickly veers to the left. Continue along this path to reach a car park near the D41a road.

(6) Turn right onto a path that veers right and heads downhill. You will soon reach a water reservoir; continue downhill to your left until you reach the sign: Sous Plan du Salève. Head towards Chalet des Convers and arrive at these chalets.

(7) Head off to the right, entering the pasture on the north side (a marker in the middle of the pasture shows you the way to go; be careful as the yellow arrow is very faded); if in doubt, you’ll spot the path ‘cleared’ by hikers. Enter the woods where you’ll find the trail again, with a small chalet on the left. The descent isn’t very steep but remains tricky in places due to the smooth stones. You’ll reach the junction where the via ferrata starts, roughly halfway down the descent.

(8) Continue the descent through the trees along the winding path until you reach the Promeneurs car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

(S/E) You can visit the Maison du Salève, which is about 1 km from the car park.
(4) Piton du Salève: Its plateau is marked by sharp limestone pavement and the Bastian Tower. It is the ideal spot for a picnic.

An ideal hike in warm weather, as it is mostly in the woods.

Hike completed on 9 July 2024
A brilliant day out; we really enjoyed hiking up the Salève, famous for a certain well-known hiker: Frankenstein’s creature!
WEATHER
Perfect: sunny, 20–25°C.
GRADIENT
Very steep ascents and descents. Steeper than you’d think—you’d need to use your hands. In fact, between the car park and point 1, over a 200m stretch, there are aids such as cables, rings embedded in the rocks and small metal steps. Once on the ridges, the paths and tracks are ordinary, with gentle to moderate gradients.
ENVIRONMENT / TERRAIN
It’s 90% woodland. The rest is cow pasture.
The ground is good, but one dares not imagine what it must be like in wet weather on the bare earth sections of the climbs. You might as well take a water park slide! I wouldn’t even try it, but that’s just my opinion.
HIGHLIGHTS
The view is superb but very limited. Geneva looks such a small town from this height! You can see it really well from the Bastian Tower, as well as the western part of Lake Geneva.
The sporting appeal lies in the intense, continuous ascent and descent: you cover about 400 metres in half an hour to an hour, slaloming between the impressive white cliffs of the Salève – it’s quite something!
VISITOR NUMBERS
There were five cars in the ‘hikers’ car park’, and we didn’t come across many people, apart from a few tourists at the Bastian Tower, which is very close to the ridge road.
IMPORTANT NOTE
The path between points 5 and 6 (except for the very short section between point 5 and the tarmac road) is abandoned and IMPASSABLE! In fact, it’s still visible on OpenStreetMap Hiking, but no longer on the IGN map.
We managed to get through, but it was a close call as the brambles and nettles are now very tall and have overgrown the path. We tried to work our way around the most overgrown areas, but without success, which is why we struggled on but couldn’t avoid the nettle stings – you’ve been warned!
Where should you go if you don’t take this path? The most obvious option is to take the parallel tarmac road. There are also paths on the other side of the tarmac road, clearly visible on the IGN map, which we didn’t try.

A quote to conclude:
As his creature climbs the mountain on a stormy night, Dr Frankenstein exclaims: ‘Who could stop a being capable of scaling the sheer slopes of Mont Salève?’

A very interesting route thanks to its uniqueness, the views across both slopes of the Salève, and the touch of history evoking the lives of the Convers brothers, whose mountain pasture—lined with remarkable lime trees—offers a superb vantage point.
Next to the Bastian Tower (recall the history of its construction), there is also a stone engraved with the names of Lord Byron and Lamartine.
Please note that between the start of the hike and point 1, there are cables to secure the steep climb through the forest.
The start of the small path between points 5 and 6 is not very visible; it would be a shame to miss it as it allows you to avoid the descent along the road to point 6.

Signposting is virtually non-existent, so you need to study the map carefully; however, we still had difficulty finding our way after marker (6) and between markers (7) and (8), where there were several possible routes.
On our 2011 IGN 3430 map, some paths did not exist, particularly the one running parallel to the D41.
The rocky section of the ascent before marker (1) is equipped with cables. The one on the descent, between (7) and (8), is not equipped and remains tricky (trekking poles are very useful).
A very beautiful hike, though not an easy one. Thank you, Mickou, for posting it.

A day’s hike on an autumn day when the rain had made the ground quite slippery and the fallen leaves sometimes obscured the path.
I was taken aback by the steep climb right from the start of the hike, but the view at the top was well worth it. I think I got lost at one point, having missed the signposts. However, it was a treat to venture deep into the forest and spot some wildlife.
