GR® 20 - Stage 13: from Usciolu to the Croci sheepfold (new route from 2011)

Stage 13 between the Usciolu PNRC refuge and the Croci sheepfold follows the new route via Matalza (since 2011). A stage with not much elevation gain, but one that should not be underestimated. The start along the ridge is a bit technical up to Punta di a Scaddatta. Then a descent through the forest, crossing fields of ferns before a gruelling climb, part of which is on a track, up to the Croci sheepfold on the Coscione plateau.

Description of the walk

(S) From the refuge, it’s a short climb to Bocca di Suragheddu, taking theGR® south-west.

(1) Continue to the left towards the south-west, following the ridge. There are a few sections where you’ll need to use your hands. A panoramic stretch with views of Monte Incudine to the left and Monte Renoso to the right.

(2) The "path" passes to the left of a hillock, the highest point of this range (and of today’s stage), Punta di a Scaddatta. Continue on theGR® in the same south-westerly direction to quickly reach the forest and then a junction at the 1,679 m point.

(3) At this junction, a path branches off to the right heading north-west, whilst theGR® continues to descend to the right towards the south-west. Take this route. A few metres further on, on your right, you will find a spring. Continue the descent following theGR® to the Bocca di l'Agnone.

(4) This is where the new route begins, passing through Matalza (red-and-white markings on the right), whilst the old route heads towards Asinau via Monte Incudine (double yellow markings). So follow the red-and-white markings on the right towards the south-west. A very “rolling” section through the forest... Shortly after leaving the forest and following a short climb, you’ll reach another junction.

(5) Continue straight on, following the red-and-white markings and keeping a south-westerly direction. You will then reach a stream (the Partuso stream).

(6) Cross the stream via a stone-paved path (elevation 1297 m). A lovely spot to dip your feet in if it’s hot... be careful, the water is cold in the morning! Then follow its tributary, the Veracolongu stream, up the left bank. Grass-covered banks with plenty of ferns – a picturesque spot!

(7) After a few minutes along the bank, a path invites you to continue straight on towards Matalza along the stream. This is not theGR®... Turn right towards the west and head up towards the 1347 m point. Cross the track, continue straight on through the ferns. Be careful, there may be wild boars!
You will then arrive at the Bassetta sheepfolds.

(8) Cross the road and take the path opposite, which climbs gently southwards. You’ll reach a car park and a spring.

(9) Walk past the San Petru Chapel and continue south-east to reach a track.

(10) Take this track to the right heading south-east, pass the Matalza refuge and begin the climb towards the Coscione Plateau. Shortly after a bridge over the Veracolongu stream, theGR® leaves the track to the right.

(11) Follow the path which climbs up the right bank of the stream towards the south-east. This section is very exposed to the sun. When you move away from the stream, you are approaching the Croci sheepfold. You will spot it at the last moment, hidden behind a large tree, after a steep climb (E).

At the Croci sheepfold, a warm welcome, good food, and clean, modern showers and toilets.

Worth a visit

We decided to push on to the Croci sheepfold on the advice of hikers we’d met in the previous days… and, as it turned out, we didn’t regret it!

Hello. In May 2024, I had booked a one-night stay at Les Bergeries de Bassetta (arriving by car) with the aim of doing a circular hike that would take me, amongst other places, along the old GR trail and up Monte Incudine. As soon as I arrived, the caretaker strongly advised me against doing this for my own safety (as the old GR trail is no longer signposted, although the route is very clearly marked). The next day, I went ahead as planned, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that nearly 50 hikers had taken this particularly scenic route (far more than via the new GR). Furthermore, I was really very disappointed by the caretaker’s behaviour, as she seems to do everything she can to ‘make a buck’. A young couple who had pitched their tent were almost forced to spend the night in a mountain hut (which is more expensive) because she told them that the police had warned her that the region was on storm alert and that she had to “make” the campers sleep in “proper accommodation” (of course, there wasn’t a single storm during my stay). AVOID AT ALL COSTS.....
Why was the route changed? To accommodate the three “sheepfolds” that were outside it. What’s more, the new route is far less pleasant.

The stage may seem short, but you need to tackle the Usciolu ridges with humility.

A beautiful section offering stunning views on both sides of the ridge. The route starts in Usciolu and features a few slightly technical sections along the ridge. After that, it’s a very pleasant walk through the forest.
I recommend the I Croci sheepfold (warm welcome, very clean, comfortable beds and excellent lasagne), one of the best stops on the GR, especially after Usciolu...

A lovely hike from Crocci to Usciolu in June – lots of flowers! The Usciolu refuge could do with more toilets. As for Crocci, it’s a very good refuge: a very friendly welcome, very clean tent pitches, hearty meals and a warm atmosphere.
We’re doing the GR from south to north for two reasons: the southern section is less difficult and serves as a warm-up, and we’ll have the sun at our backs.
