Esteben Borda lodge and farm via Gorospil

A little extra tip for this hike to Gorospil, which is already listed on Visorando. Of course, the views from the Haizagerri ridge are magnificent, but for food lovers, extending the walk to Esteben Borda to enjoy some delicious dishes or simply have a drink makes it even more appealing.

Give them a ring the day before to check, as contrary to what’s stated on their website, it’s not open every day in the low season.

Description of the walk

Take the D20, pass through Ainhoa. Just before Dantcharia, take a small road on the left towards the quarry. Continue along this road, which runs alongside Lapitxuri for 3 km, and park next to a footbridge and a fish farm.

(S/E) Take the path that climbs through the forest to a sort of track leading to the Arotzenborda farm. Turn right.

(1) Before reaching the farm, take the track on the left which joins the end of a road further up.

(2) Follow the ridge south-eastwards to reach the first summit on the grassy ridge.

(3) Continue climbing to reach the foot of Gorospil, which you skirt slightly below on the right. You’ll come to a lovely pasture with a magnificent dead tree.

(4) Turn onto the path that heads off into the grass on the far right, due south. Cross the Gorospil pass

(5) Continue to the junction of roads and paths in Spain.

(6) Follow the road opposite, still heading due south. Leave it very quickly to turn left onto the road that descends north-east and then east. A little further on, on your left, you’ll see signs for the Esteben Borda lodge. Return to France and reach the lodge.

(7) The return journey follows the same route as far as the fish farm (S/E).

A lovely, not overly difficult route that climbs steadily all the way out. We went as far as the summit of Gorospil, which isn’t on the route. Although it’s a return trip along the same path, the views are different on the way up and down.
