Garlaban via the Vallon des Piches

Discover Garlaban, the legendary peak of the Aubagne region, via an original route that takes you past the base of the Grotte de Manon, then up the Vallon des Piches along a final path to find the faint traces of a very ancient rosette. The magnificent 360° view from the summit of Garlaban is breathtaking. The return journey is a gentle walk along the track and allows for a short detour to explore the Route des Pierres Gravées, where you’ll find around a hundred engravings by Louis Douard.
Note: there are only about thirty spaces at the Puits de Raimu car park, which fill up quickly, particularly at weekends.

Description of the walk

Park in the Puits de Raimu car park at the end of Chemin de Ruissatel.

(S/E) Take the track that climbs to the left – this is the Chemin de la Font de Mai – until you reach a crossroads with several directions.

(1) Continue left, following the blue markings, until you reach a crossroads near the Ferme d'Angèle.

(2) Stay on the track straight ahead to reach the Col d'Aubignane fairly quickly.

(3) The blue markings end here. Take the yellow-marked path straight ahead, heading due north. At the next junction, follow the sign for the Grotte de Manon marked on a rock. Continue uphill to reach the junction leading to the Grotte de Manon or Baume du Plantier.

(4) Continue straight up the slope, then emerge into the Vallon des Piches. Reach a junction leading to the Heath Pass.

(5) Leave the marked path and take the path on the left to continue through the Vallon des Piches. Further up, you’ll come to a marked path; follow it to the left for a few metres to find the rosette.

(6) Turn back to rejoin the marked path, then follow it to the left, coming out onto the Garlaban track. Take this straight ahead along a slightly downhill section and reach the Col du Garlaban.

(7) From here, take one of the many paths leading to the summit of Garlaban.

(8) Return to the pass.

(7) Take the wide track on the left and continue the descent, arriving above the Grotte de Manon.

(9) Continue the winding descent, then arrive directly beneath a power line.

(10) Leave the track and take the path on the left. Follow the markings for a few metres, then turn right to return to the junction near Angèle’s Farm, which you passed on the way out.

(2) Follow the route taken on the way there, turning left and heading in the opposite direction to return to the Puits de Raimu car park (S/E).
