Coming from the D5, head towards Mareuge via the D5h and, once in the village, keep turning right, pass the old chapel, and park by the roadside on the right, shortly afterwards, on a lay-by. This is the hikers’ car park. There is a sign for a walking route (which does not correspond to this one).
(S/E) Follow the road westwards, in the opposite direction to where you arrived by car, then take the first hairpin bend on the left into Rue du Baladou. At the junction just after that, turn right. Go straight on at the four-way junction. At the T-junction with Rue Chareyre Grande, turn right. Cross the Monne (information sign about the river restoration works) and you’ll reach a junction marked by a hiking signpost, Les Creux.
(1) Turn right (towards Les Prés de Saignes). The path climbs steeply and joins a wide track. Follow it to the right.
(2) At the crossroads, turn left, passing a signpost on your right, and you’ll soon reach another junction at the ‘Les Prés de Saignes’ signpost. Turn right, towards ‘Bois de Saignes’. A little further on, you’ll reach the ‘Bois de Saignes’ signpost, in a clearing offering a view over the Fredet valley. A path leads down to the left.
(3) Carry on straight ahead for a few more metres to enjoy the view, then retrace your steps.
(3) Take the path leading down to the right, towards Beaune le Froid. Take care, as it is stony. At a left-hand bend, ignore a path branching off to the right in a hairpin bend.
(4) Shortly afterwards, carry on straight ahead, ignoring the path branching off to the right. The path continues through pastures. Ignore the narrower field paths branching off to the sides. You’ll notice a basalt knoll on the left: the Suc de Teirilloux.
(5) Turn onto the first path on the left after passing the knoll. You’ll come to a T-junction; turn right to reach the hamlet of Saignes.
(6) At the Fork in the road as you reach the first houses, keep to the right. Ignore a road on the left and you’ll come to a T-junction by a covered drinking trough. Turn right and ignore a road on the left. Pass a fountain on your left.
(7) At the junction just after the fountain, take a path on the right, between a house and a barn, which looks private but isn’t. After the buildings, follow the path as it curves to the right, ignoring a more or less distinct field path on the left. Further on, you’ll reach a T-junction.
(8) Turn right, then at the next T-junction, turn left. You’ll come to a wide track.
(9) Follow it to the left.
(10) At the next crossroads, turn right to head back towards Mareuge. You’ll walk alongside the Monne on your left to begin with (IGN map not up to date). Further up, you’ll come to a street.
(11) At the first junction, turn right and then ignore the street on the left. You’ll reach a junction opposite a fountain; note the wash house on the left. Continue straight ahead, slightly to the left, along the street to the right of the wash house, then turn onto Rue de la Fontaine, which branches off to the right. You’ll come to a junction with a fountain and the village bakery on your right. Turn left, pass to the right of the old chapel—which has been converted into a house—and you’ll find the car park (S/E).
