Description of the walk

When you arrive in Mareuge via the D5, then the D5H, drive through the village to find a few parking spaces on the left-hand side of the road, after a path that branches off to the right and before a street that branches off to the left.
Please note! This hike is not marked in its entirety, nor as such.

(S/E) Return to the centre of the village and take the second street on the right. At the intersection, turn left and ignore a street on the right at the fountain and the Boutique Mohair. At the next T-junction, turn right. Ignore a street on the right and, at the crossroads, turn left towards the bridge, following the brown mountain bike signs. Cross the Monne and arrive on a path, at the yellow signs.

(1) Follow the signs to Bois de Mareuge on the right. Shortly afterwards, ignore a path on the right. You will come to a wide gravel path. Follow it to the right until you reach a crossroads with several paths.

(2) Ignore the first narrow path on the right, then, at the intersection of three paths, take the one furthest to the right. Shortly afterwards, you will see brown mountain bike signs. At the fork shortly afterwards, at the Forêt de Mareuge sign, keep left. Continue straight ahead through the forest until you reach a field on your left, at the Bois de Maugue yellow signs.

(3) Turn left. After about 200 metres, you will come to a wide path (small yellow arrows). Follow it to the left and then, at the fork shortly afterwards, at the Bois de Saignes sign, turn right onto a path that descends steeply.

(4) At the intersection, ignore the path on the right and then, just after, turn right, following the yellow arrows. Further on, as the path becomes tarmac, you will see a large stone in the field on the left. Ignore a path on the left and continue straight ahead towards Les Buges. Cross the Ruisseau de Fredet stream and you will come to a road at a cross.

(5) Follow the road to the left. At the junction with a road coming from the right (Font des Chiens sign), continue straight ahead towards Vegude. Continue straight ahead at the following junctions (the roads on the right all lead to the village of Beaune-le-Froid) until you reach the D617, at the yellow signs.

(6) Follow the road to the left towards La Motte, then, about 50 metres further on, as the road bends to the right, continue straight ahead. Cross the Ruisseau de Fredet stream again. At the T-junction (La Motte signpost), follow the path on the right towards Croix du Pendu. You will come to the D5 road. Follow it to the right for about 100 metres (wide grassy verge).

(7) Take the first road on the left, towards the "Ferme de Laval" sign. Immediately after, turn onto the path on the left and then, at the next intersection, follow the path furthest to the left. Ignore a path on the right further on, then arrive at a crossroads with four paths, at a cross and yellow signs.

(8) Continue straight ahead towards Prés de Saignes. Cross the D5 and continue straight ahead to enter the hamlet of Saignes. Ignore a street on the right, pass to the left of the fountain-wash house, and ignore a street on the left just behind it.

(9) Just after a fountain on the left side of the street, take a path on the right. At the fork shortly after, keep to the right. At the T-junction with another path, turn right (1101m).

(10) At the next intersection, turn left, then left again at the next four-way intersection (1056m).

(11) Turn right onto the next path and immediately cross the Monne. When you reach the first houses in Mareuge, ignore the streets on the left. At the fountain, at the crossroads of four streets, turn left and continue straight ahead to cross the village and reach the car park (S/E).

Thank you for the route!
With the exception of the first stop at the Mohair fountain, where we didn't understand the directions (confusion between the street and the farm entrance, I think), we followed the route without too much trouble using a printed map.
The view is magnificent, with butterflies galore and even wild raspberries.
We loved this hike.
