The Mangin Tower and the Guards' Grave

The Retz Forest was the scene of intense fighting during the two battles of the Marne, in September 1914 and during the summer of 1918. Numerous monuments retrace this history, and this hike offers the opportunity to discover several of them, including a replica of a tall observation tower and a moving military cemetery. Starting from a pretty village with a charmingly simple church, the route is mainly through forest.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Paths of remembrance from the Great War

Description of the walk

Departure from the town hall of Puiseux-en-Retz. Park in the town hall car park (bus station) or, if it is full, along the main street, Rue du Château.

Crossroads in the forest are generally signposted, as are the main roads.

Without signposts

(S/E) With your back to the town hall, turn left and walk past the war memorial. Take thefirst right, Rue des Grands Jardins. Stay on this street, ignore a street on the left and continue on the road, which is closed to vehicles over 10 tonnes: the tarmac then gives way to a gravel track. After crossing the Laie du Gerfaut, the track turns left and joins another track: follow this track to the left for about 50 metres.

Signposted "Ru de Retz"

(1) At the Carrefour des Six Routes, turn right onto an uphill path.

Red and white markings + signposted "Ru de Retz"/Soldat

At the next crossroads, turn left onto Route du Mur du Parc. After about 100 metres, turn right and continue along a winding path (the purple line on the IGN map, which is supposed to represent theGR®®11, is very approximate here).

(2) Cross the Laie du Chablis des Bouleaux and continue along the path. Ignore a path branching off to the right (signpost "Sentier Réaumont") and take a footbridge over a stream. The Mangin Tower becomes clearly visible on the left. Climb steeply, ignoring a path branching off to the right. At the top, at a T-junction, turn left and descend slightly. This will take you to the foot of the Mangin Tower.

(3) Continue along a wide gravel path and you will soon reach the Mangin stele. Turn right at the hairpin bend on the gravel path and descend. Ignore a turn-off on the left (not shown on the map), pass through a forest barrier and you will come out onto a small tarmac road (Route du Faîte).

No markings

(4) Follow the road to the right and pass the Lieutenant Chasseval stele. Before a left-hand bend, leave the road and turn left uphill onto Laie des Chablis des Bouleaux. At the top of the hill (Carrefour de Bellevue on the map), continue straight ahead and descend into a pine forest with fern undergrowth.

(5) At the crossroads, turn right onto a grassy path. At the next crossroads, continue straight ahead. At Carrefour de la Fontaine Blanche, cross a paved road and continue straight ahead onto Laie d'Haramont. Descend into a sparse beech forest, then climb back up on the opposite side.

(6) At the crossroads, take the third path on the right (north-west), La Laie de Marguerie (yellow and brown markings). Continue straight ahead, following the ups and downs of the path, until you reach Carrefour Marguerite, at the edge of the D81 road and opposite the "Passant arrête-toi" monument.

(7) Follow the road to the left (take care) to the Guards' Grave (British cemetery). Cross the road carefully (this is where visibility is best) and continue left until you reach a bend. Turn right at an acute angle and go up a smaller road. Opposite the Rond de la Reine forest house, turn right onto a small tarmac road. Return to the D81 and cross it carefully.

Red and white markings + "Ru de Retz"/Soldat signs

(7) Follow the D81 to the left (ignore the road to the right towards the Mangin Tower) and, a few metres after the end of the safety barrier, turn right onto a downhill path (be careful to spot this turn-off).

(8) At the next crossroads, turn right, heading due east. At the Carrefour de L'Herbier, continue straight ahead. The path becomes narrower and winds through the undergrowth (more than the map suggests).

No markings

(9) At the crossroads (plot no. 301), turn sharply left. At the next crossroads, cross a stony track and take the Laie des Quatre Chapons path diagonally to the right. Continue straight ahead on this good path until you reach the Carrefour de Puiseux crossroads in an open area.

(10) Then turn left onto Laie des Fonds Houchad. You will immediately come to a fork: take the right-hand path (azimuth 340), which is not very well marked, and ignore the wider path on the left (azimuth 320), which quickly becomes very overgrown. Once you enter the undergrowth, the path gives way to a track that descends slightly. Go through a forest barrier, rejoin the tarmac road and continue straight ahead along Rue des Grands Jardins, which you took on the way out. At the end, turn left and you will soon reach the town hall (S/E).

Notes

Hiking boots are required. Some paths have uneven ground. Passages may be muddy in wet weather.

No water sources or shops along the route.

During the hunting season (from late September to late February), avoid days when hunts are organised: Monday, Thursday or Friday, depending on the hunting ground. Consult the map of hunting grounds and the hunting calendar (see the Retz National Forest at the bottom of the page).

A 1:25,000 map is essential (at least the one accompanying this description). A compass may be useful.

This hike follows several sections of routes designed by the Association des Amis de la Forêt de Retz.

Conditions of access to the Mangin Tower (3):
- The climb (25 metres in height) via a spiral staircase is well secured.
- The platforms are relatively narrow: no more than 15 people are allowed on at any one time.
- Minors must be accompanied by adults.
- Access is prohibited at night and during certain weather conditions (thunderstorms, high winds, etc.).
- People who are prone to vertigo may choose not to make the climb.

Additional information:
This hike can be complemented by the "Forêt de Retz - Le monument Van Vollenhoven et la butte de Château-Fée" hike. The starting point for this second hike, in Longpont, is 10 km from Puiseux-en-Retz, via Montgobert and the D2.

Hike completed by the author on 8 September 2018.

Worth a visit

- Church of Piuseux-en-Retz, slightly off the route shortly after the starting point.
- Mangin Tower (3). A 25-metre-high wooden tower, erected in 2017 near the site of the original tower, which was built in 1916-1917 and used by General Mangin (1866-1925) during the offensive of 18 July 1918 in the Forest of Retz. Numerous information panels at the various platforms. From the top, there is a superb view of the forest and the Soissonnais plateau.
- Mangin memorial, shortly after the tower, on the site of the original tower. The latter was destroyed in 1924 during a storm, and the memorial was erected in its place in 1926.
- Stele of Lieutenant Chasseval.
- "Passant arrête-toi" monument (7). Monument erected in memory of a British soldier killed on1 September 1914, aged 18.
- Guards' Grave, shortly after (7). Military cemetery containing the remains of 98 British soldiers killed in the sector in September 1914.
- Beautiful forests.

Nice hike but on Sunday 23/02/25 the forest paths were very badly damaged by forestry machinery, which spoiled the fun a little. The paths that did not use the forest paths were perfect and, as a bonus, we had sunshine. I hope the paths will be repaired.

Hike completed on 3/11/2024.
Very pleasant route, the forest is beautiful at this time of year, and the weather was fine.
No problem following the route, good description.
The main point of interest is the Mangin Tower. The information panels on each floor taught us a lot about the First World War and the Retz forest.

A very pleasant walk with stunning views of the surrounding area from the observation tower. Be sure to wear sturdy footwear as many areas are muddy. There are also trees blocking the path, but these are easily bypassed.

Beautiful hike with different points of interest. Parish-specific to Brittany MALGIN tower and memorial monuments.
However, there is a lot of damage to the paths caused by wild boars. Otherwise, the forest is as majestic as ever.

Hello némodu, and thank you for your comments.

I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the hike despite the fallen trees. I've also noticed that fallen trees are staying in place longer than they did several years ago... Let's hope things get back to normal.

To be reviewed with the ONF (French National Forestry Office) as numerous trees litter the paths (shared in part by mountain bikers), particularly between points 1 and 3. It is better to continue on the stony track for a few more intersections and between points 5 and 7, where fortunately the detour is easier; a recurring problem in our forests in recent years... It's a shame because this route is very hilly and far from monotonous, and it is certainly interesting from a historical point of view as well as for discovering the forest environment.

A beautiful hike with several reminders of the Great War (British cemeteries, Mangin Tower, etc.). A variety of forest landscapes: high forests, pine forests, sand dunes, etc. Be careful of traffic around the British cemetery.

The main attraction of this hike is the discovery of General Mangin's observation tower. Built in the summer of 1918, it played a decisive role in the Allies' victory over the German army.
On the eighth and top floor, 25 metres above the ground, you can admire breathtaking panoramic views of the Soissonnais massif and plateaus and the Aisne valley.

A beautiful and very informative walk through the historical past of this corner of the forest.
The Mangin Tower is worth visiting if only for its exceptional view 25 metres above the forest.
