Around the Domaine de Jean le Roux d'Aile

We invite you to discover an itinerary combining history and nature, offering exceptional panoramic views of the village of Saint-Pierre-Aigle. A grassy path will lead us towards the Dommier quarry, before we take a farm track that will take us to Saint-Pierre-Aigle. Here, we will have a magnificent view of the village's central square and church. The hike continues through Chafossepour to reach the surrounding forest. After this immersion in the rural world, we will continue our journey through the undergrowth for about 2 km, sheltered by the coolness of the trees. Nature will then reveal the place known as Le Trou Madelon, where we will gradually emerge from the forest and enter the plain. From there, we will walk along the edge of Saint-Pierre, on the edge of the woods, before beginning our descent towards Valsery Abbey.

Description of the walk

Departure from the visitor car park at Valsery Abbey. Please note that this grassy car park becomes muddy in wet weather.

(S/E) Walk past the castle, follow the road for about 200 metres and take the first path on the left. At the crossroads, turn right, walk past the pond and join the D17.

(1) Take this road on the left and follow it carefully to the Pont Saint-Denis bridge.

(2) Cross over and take the path opposite that climbs up to the right of the D17; it can be quite overgrown at times. Join another path and continue to the right until you reach the bend, which offers a beautiful view of Cœuvres-et-Valsery.

(3) Take the path climbing to the right, which takes you up the 60-metre slope to the plateau. Then follow the farm track straight ahead to the junction in front of a small pond.

(4) Ignore the path on the left and continue straight ahead to the entrance to the village of Saint-Pierre-Aigle. You will come out onto Rue des Tourelles (D172).

(5) Cross carefully and take the tarmac road opposite that leads downhill (Rue Paul Bazin), passing in front of the town hall and then the entrance to the church. Continue downhill on the road on the left (Rue Joseph Petit Brouaud), turn right with the street and continue to the junction with the D17.

(6) Cross the departmental road with caution and continue straight ahead towards Chafosse. Continue straight ahead to cross the hamlet and go to the edge of the Retz Forest.

(7) Follow the forest path that descends to the right to Laie du Fond d'Argent.

(8) Continue right along this stream to the Carrefour du Conservateur. Turn left to follow the Laie de Chafosse to the Carrefour du Grand Veneur.

(9) Turn right and continue to the D2.

(10) Carefully climb this road for about 800 metres, then take the first path on the right. Follow the edge of the woods along Trou Madelon. Turn left onto the path and continue to an intersection.

(11) Ignore the path that leads directly to Valsery and continue along the edge of the woods, going around the Fonds de Saint-Pierre. Return to the path you ignored earlier and follow it to the right until you reach the crossroads at the entrance to the woods.

(12)An unfenced passage on the right leads to a path downhill to the visitor car park at Valsery Abbey (S/E).
