Faycelles – Espagnac

From the top of the Faycelles plateau, between the Lot and the Célé rivers, the route leads to the starting point ofthe GR®651for aninitial descent into the Célé valley.
Medieval villages such as Faycelles, Corn and Espagnac, ancient stone castles, churches, chapels and priories: you’re definitely on a route of the Way of St James. The most beautiful one, they say.
The route is very shaded and benefits from the coolness of the Célé valley.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: The Célé Valley in 7 stages

Description of the walk

The starting point for this stage is at the town hall in Faycelles, a village situated at the junction of the D662 and the D21, approximately 13 km south-west of Figeac. The route description begins at the bus stop for the Figeac–Cahors service, on the right-hand side of the D662 as you head uphill.

(S) Walk downhill towards Carjac along the road until you reach the next junction, about a hundred metres further down. Follow theGR®65markings.
Note: from this point, the route follows the red and white GR® signposts.
At the junction, turn right onto the small road leading towards Faycelles. A little further on, turn right onto Rue de la Forge, which climbs towards the town hall in the centre of Faycelles. Turn left at the town hall to rejoin the road running along the edge of the valley, then follow it to the right towards the west.
Further on, after a double hairpin bend, take a path that descends along the hillside beneath the oak trees. Return to the plateau to rejoin a road. First turn right then left for a few metres, then rejoin the path that branches off to the right after a farmhouse, heading west. At the next crossroads, look out for a beautiful cross beneath the trees; continue straight ahead onto the Route de Lascam. Further on, theGR® turns right; after La Vaysse, take a path on the right under the trees. Reach a road and proceed to the Mas de la Croix junction on the D21. At this junction, theGR®65andGR®651routes split.

(1) Continue on theGR®651, following the D21 as it descends towards Beduer. After passing the castle on your left, reach the Carrefour du Château de Beduer junction on the D19.

(2) Carry on straight ahead along the D21, heading downhill towards Camboulit for about a hundred metres. Turn right onto theGR®, continuing under the trees, taking care as the path is quite slippery in wet weather. Reach the River Célé at the bottom of the valley at an information point.
Continue westwards along the farm track at the bottom of the Célé valley. Cross back over the D21, pass a small waterfall, and, at Boussac, reach the bridge that takes you across the Célé once more. Take the opportunity to stop at the picnic area here before the bridge.
Cross the Célé to reach another information point by the little church at Boussac.

(3) Take the road that climbs up opposite the information point. Further up, turn left at a cross, heading west. Continue until you reach the departmental road between the Célé and the cliff. Follow the departmental road with care as far as the village of Corn.

(4) Turn right up the first narrow lane. Continue through the narrow lanes, past the church, and take a moment to enjoy this very pretty village. Shortly afterwards, just past the church, head down to the left along a railing, then cross back onto the departmental road and continue under the trees. Then take the road to the left to cross the Célé again. Turn right after the bridge.
Pass by the foot of Goudou Castle, go round it and head up towards the south-east. 400m Further on, leave the road and take the path leading downhill to the right. Descend gradually to reach valley level. Pass the houses of Rian on your right and begin a wide bend to the right towards the river at Sainte-Eulalie. Just before the Sainte-Eulalie bridge, look out for the start of the path on the left leading down into the scrub. Don’t hesitate to cross the bridge to climb up to the little chapel of Sainte-Eulalie (open in summer).

(5) Take the path on the left. Walk alongside the River Célé under the trees at the foot of the cliff, which remains on your left. Pass the houses of Salebio and rejoin a wider path. Reach the road just before the village of Espagnac. You’ll emerge at the former Priory of Espagnac (E).

A lovely walk, fairly easy, often in the shade; the villages you pass through are very pretty. The only downside is that there’s a bit too much tarmac.
