Park in the car park at Hanau Pond.
(S/E) Walk past the La Voile Blanche restaurant and the Hôtel Beau-Rivage to join the Blue Triangle marked route and, after about a hundred metres, turn off onto the Blue Cross route. Continue along and cross the forest track to reach the Lieschbach pond.
(1) Continue to the right along the pond, following the Blue Cross markings. Begin a challenging climb to reach the magnificent ruins of Falkenstein Castle.
(2) Turn right onto the mixed Blue Cross/Yellow Triangle route. You will soon reach a crossroads with four perpendicular paths.
(3) Here you have two options:
- stay on the Yellow Triangle trail on the paved road,
- or turn left onto the Blue Ring trail and turn right at the next crossroads (see map),
to arrive at a multi-directional crossroads in both cases.
(4) Turn north onto the blue disc route. Stay on this slightly uphill path to reach the ruins of Rothenbourg Castle.
(5) After viewing/walking around the Rothenbourg ruins, descend into the valley via the small Disque Bleu trail, cross the bridge and after 150 metres, turn left onto the Sentier Ligne Maginot trail, marked Anneau Rouge. This will take you to the Étang d'Erbsenweiher lake.
(6) Turn left onto theGR®532, then right. When you reach the tarmac road, continue straight ahead, staying on theGR®532. You will reach the splendid sandstone cliff of the Erbsenfelsen.
(7) Here, take a very pleasant loop around the Erbsefelsen sandstone cliff and its arch. Continue along theGR® to reach Waldeck Castle.
(8) At the intersection, take the short climb opposite you to reach the ruins of Waldeck Castle and its tower.
After your visit, return to the intersection and head south, still on theGR®532, crossing the hamlet and then the fields, with theGR®532taking you to Hanau Pond through the forest.
(S/E) Return to the public car park at Hanau Pond via the Croix Bleue/GR®532forest path. I hope you enjoyed the walk!
